In early April 2021, the University will begin processing direct relief payments totaling over $10 million to students. The grants will be automatic and students do not need to apply. These funds are from the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act approved by Congress in late December 2020. Chico State condemns racism, hatred, violence, and the rise in attacks we are witnessing against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. As an academic community, we remain deeply and unequivocally committed to our University priority of equity, diversity and inclusion. We stand in solidarity with our Asian American and Pacific Islander students, faculty and staff. Wildcats, none of us should ever be silent in the face of hate. President Gayle Hutchinson

With anti-Asian hate surging over the last year, we revisit a plea to reject racism penned by sociology professor Chunyan Song last spring: One of the hardest things to explain to my fellow American friends in the United States is how lonely I have been feeling. #StopAsianHate

A doctor I was working with previously told me ‘You could probably help 10,000 people in your life as a physician, but you can potentially help millions of people if you continue with your dreams.’ So that’s what I’m doing, continuing with my dreams. As we continue to highlight some of our most-read stories of 2020, see how 2020 graduate Slade Giles uses his life experiences as fuel for living for today and tomorrow. https://today.csuchico.edu/outstanding-grad-slade-giles/

Never have we relied so deeply on technology and internet connectivity. As we all grappled in 2020 with shifting from in-person communications to virtual, our need for stable connections demanded California improve its broadband coverage. In one of our top stories on Chico State Today, we explore the digital divide, how the University is supporting solutions, and opportunities ahead. https://today.csuchico.edu/the-digital-divide/

On Friday, we were encouraged to learn that undocumented immigrants were granted a second chance at hope after a federal judge ordered to fully restore Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). An estimated one million undocumented immigrants could soon benefit from the program, allowing them to apply for work authorization if granted DACA. For a personal look into the significance of this historic moment, Chico State students shared their experiences in a story for Chico State Today in 2018. On November 8, 1965, the Higher Education Act was signed, paving the way for students of color and those from lower-income families to make their dream of attending college a reality. Today that dream lives on in the more than 52% of Chico State students who are the first-generation in their family to earn a four-year degree. Join us as we celebrate the accomplishments of alumni, faculty, and staff and the trails they’ve blazed for our current and future Wildcats. #FirstGen #CelebrateFirstGen

Halloween weekend is approaching, and campus representatives have shared some important advice to help keep you and your peers safe this spooky season. The impact of COVID-19 means our community will have to celebrate Halloween a little differently this year. We encourage Wildcats to rise to the challenge and avoid large gatherings. Instead, be creative with how you celebrate by gathering virtually or with roommates. Butte County has made progress in reopening and limiting th...e spread of COVID-19, and it's critical to do your part so we don't backtrack on the progress our community has already made. If you see something inappropriate or dangerous, speak up and call 911. It's important to keep our Wildcat family safe and take care of each other. The greatest thing we can do in this time is continuing to make progress on the pandemic and turning towards a more normal life. Stay safe this Halloween, Wildcats!
