Before the Japanese. Before the Filipinos. Before any other Asian community in San Jose, there were the Chinese. Did you know that five Chinatowns existed in Sa...n Jose? And, did you know that the fifth Chinatown (Heinlenville) provided the nurturing environment that gave birth to San Jose Japantown? In episode 2 of "Discovering the Hidden Histories of San Jose Japantown," historian Connie Young Yu and Brenda Hee Wong of the Chinese Historical and Cultural Project will discuss "Heinlenville" Chinatown, the Ng Shing Gung temple, and the interconnected histories of the Chinese and Japanese in San Jose. Join us for the livestream at https://www.facebook/JAMsjOfficial/ Saturday, July 25, 2020 from 1pm to 2pm Discover the historic and cultural treasures through the Hidden Histories of San Jose Japantown, an Augmented Reality art project.

Please follow this unique and timely project now underway - Hidden Histories! "People didn't know for decades that there was a Chinatown in San Jose, and actually there were five." -- historian Connie Young Yu. The exclusionary actions that violently wiped out the Market Street Chinatown, and then the paving over of the Heinleinville Chinatown, including the destruction of the Ng Shing Gung temple are sad evidence of xenophobia and the steady drive of forced assimilation.... With the Hidden Histories of San Jose Japantown augmented reality art project, we hope to give people a window into the past and into the hearts of the real people who lived, loved, worked, were born, and died here. This place has meaning. When you walk the streets, try to see it, try to remember. https://vimeo.com/208612740
Join us today for the 18th annual Day Of Remembrance 1:30PM-3:00PM - Conference Room A&B On the 78th anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9066 that marked the beginning of the forced expulsion and mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, we reflect upon the lessons learned about civil liberties as we continue to face an upsurge in racism, profiling, and attacks on immigrant communities. Featuring presentations and speakers:... What does legal and illegal really mean? During WWII, the U.S. government forcibly removed from Peru immigrants of Japanese Ancestry, seized their passports, and sent them to detention camps in the U.S. to be used for possible Prisoner of War exchanges. At the end of the war, they were treated as illegal aliens. Bekki Shibayama, daughter of the late San Jose activist, and Japanese Peruvian, Art Shibayama, will discuss the ongoing efforts to win justice today for Japanese Latin Americans and parallels to what is happening to other immigrant and refugee groups today. What does reparations mean? Reparations for slavery is a topic in the national elections: how does the Japanese American redress/reparations case fit into this debate and civil liberties in general? How do you unite a community to defend civil liberties for others? Eric Boas of San Jose Nikkei Resisters will discuss their quilt project and efforts to raise funds to help defend local Southeast Asians who originally entered the US as refugees, but now face deportation.
