Did you know? The GIS map created by OC Public Works' survey team to show #SilveradoFire and #BlueRidgeFire evacuation zones had nearly 4 million views! Tha...t's an average of over 280,000 views per day. This innovative tool allows us to show impacted areas, road closures and other important geographic information in real time. Thanks to our partners at Orange County Sheriff's Department, CA and Orange County Fire Authority for the great collaboration to make sure we have helpful resources in place to keep communities safe. . Welcome to Mentoring Mondays for the Land Surveying Profession. This will be a weekly Zoom meeting room for anyone wanting to learn more. Whether you are freshm...an in college or a 50 year Professional Land Surveyor, we all have questions or we want help with that second opinion. We will have our first meeting on Monday 9/14/2020 @ 4pm Pacific time. Please email me at [email protected] to register for the meeting, once I receive your email, I will send you the Zoom meeting link. We can discuss the best meeting time (it will be dinner time for someone at some point across the country no matter what time we have these meetings) and we will also talk about what everyone hopes to get out of these weekly meetings. Please bring your questions and positive attitude to the meetings so we can have some great discussions! Hope to see you on Zoom! See more

Ode to Virtual Conferences (by Carl C.deBaca) It seems so strange to think about life in the Before Time, back when we used to go to lunch with our friends, in ...restaurants and coffee shops. As hard as it is to believe now, my company use to have department meetings in person, in conference rooms where ten of us would sit around a table made for 6 and gasp, we would think nothing of reaching into the big pink box and pulling our a pastry that might have been touched by others. In the Before Time we had chapter meetings at local eateries and sometimes we showed up early and crowded into the bar to catch up and tell stories without a mask! As impossible as it sounds, we used to go to parks and watch our kids or grandkids (geezer alert) engage in sporting events, packing onto aluminum or wooden bleachers that hadn’t been cleaned since Carter was president. And nobody thought twice about it. Here’s one that seems almost incredible: in the Before Time we held live conferences where hundreds of surveyors would pack into small, inadequately ventilated meeting rooms to see a speaker, who was actually there in the room, make a presentation! I know, it sounds crazy. You probably don’t recall, but back then we ate at buffet lines where the food was stacked up and uncovered and each of passed by, again mask-free. Holy cow! During breaks between classes, we would mill around in a crowd for the opportunity to gawk at or touch, old survey gear, and no one came along behind us to wipe the stuff down with bleach. Unconscionable, and unheard of in this day and age! Things are so much better now. I haven’t been outdoors or seen another person in what feels like forever. Everything I need is delivered to my doorstep. My desire to wander the Earth or learn new things is limited only by my bandwidth. Heck, I just got 20 PDH’s while maintaining my pasty complexion, never once leaving my bedroom desk. I’m not even sure I bothered to get dressed. I may have showered at some point, who knows? The Before Time was okay, I guess, but actually doing things seems so old-fashioned.
