A quick update on Steven, our gentleman experiencing homelessness in the Cal Heights UMC vicinity. It’s important for me to share this as I’ve heard conversatio...ns about him while standing in line to make purchases in the area and had to correct some misinformation. We at California Heights United Methodist Church are doing what we can to both get Steven the help he needs through various community groups that work with people experiencing homelessness. It’s not often in our community that someone in Steven’s situation has stayed for so long a period and I am fully aware of the anxiety and frustration it has caused for many. Unfortunately, like the current pandemic, our society is ill-prepared to handle the current and increasing homeless population. I want to thank the wonderful people at LA-HOP, a program that responds to care for homeless persons in LA County, and the Long Beach Police and human services for their response and attempts to help Steven and our community in this situation. I also want to thank countless others who have offered assistance in getting Steven the help and shelter he needs. These groups as well as other individuals are working to safeguard our community of which Steven is a part. As it stands, Steven is still denying assistance. However, LA-HOP and human services, as well as myself and others are continuing to encourage him to receive the offers of help. Until Steven chooses assistance or to voluntarily move from the area, it is his right to stay on public property and neither the church, community, nor Police can force him to leave. Until he chooses an option, please do your best to be kind, avoid confrontation, and know that we are doing our best to do what is best for all involved. Tomorrow morning at 9:00 am I will be joining a group of people in San Pedro for a caravan to support truck drivers in the midst of COVID-19. Many of the drivers have taken a huge cut in their income and have been given little protection against infection. They need our help. Would you like to join me? However, the proceeds from the concert will be donated to participating LGBTQ advocating organizations including UMC LGBTQ advocacy (Reconciling Ministries in our lingo)
