Joshua D. Hinson Yesterday at 6:38 AM Abokkoli’ Fochosh Holba’ (Wood Duck Effigy) Inspired by ancestral duck effigy ceramics and sculpture traditions, this Chikashsha wood duck effigy is carved in a contented position in northern white cedar and tupelo, painted in artists’ oil colors. The one piece head and body are carved with traditional hand tools and decoy making techniques of the Core Sound, North Carolina area, blended with the visual vocabulary of my Mississippian ...and Chikashsha ancestors. This effigy sculpture is my vision of what an ancestral Chikashsha wood sculpture may have looked like, and honors both my tribal ancestors and the decoy makers of Core Sound, who taught me to carve and welcomed me into their rich tradition of waterfowling and decoy making. This piece stands prominently in my body of work, and reflects simultaneously the adherence to tradition and commitment to mediated cultural change, in the pursuit of survivance, of my Chikashsha ancestors. Materials Northern white cedar, tupelo, artists’ oil colors Dimensions 8 x 16 x 5 See more

Day 2 of American Indian Heritage Month. Today we're going to look at "Residential Boarding Schools". Won't hear about this on TV.... Between 1860 and the 1978 (YES 1978) hundreds of thousands of Native American children were removed from their homes and families and placed in boarding schools operated by the federal government and the churches. Though we don't know how many children were taken in total, by 1900 there were 20,000 children in Indian boarding schools, and by 1925 that number had more than tripled. The U.S. Native children that were voluntarily or forcibly removed from their homes, families, and communities during this time were taken to schools far away where they were punished for speaking their native language, banned from acting in any way that might be seen to represent traditional or cultural practices, stripped of traditional clothing, hair and personal belongings and behaviors reflective of their native culture. They suffered physical, sexual, cultural and spiritual abuse and neglect, and experienced treatment that in many cases constituted torture for speaking their Native languages. Many children never returned home and their fates have yet to be accounted for by the U.S. government. There is a list of 6,000 children's names of those who died in the schools. 6,000!

After obtaining a master’s degree in American Indian Public health, Chickasaw citizen Ryan Sealy began a new career serving 43 tribes across Oregon, Washington ...and Idaho. As the coronavirus pandemic took hold, her job duties shifted to assist tribes with the pandemic. Today, she consults with tribes on their reopening plans and COVID-19 protocols, elders’ centers, health facilities and day cares. Being Chickasaw really did lead me to want to work for Native people, Sealy said. If you’re not thinking beyond yourself, you’re not thinking big enough. Read more about Ryan Sealy and her service to tribes across the Northeast at our website. Full story: https://Chickasaw.net//Chickasaw-environmental-health-pro-
