California Natural Pools 03.12.2020

6 months and not a drop of chemical of any kind. As our friend Anthony Archer-Wills would say, Gin clear!

End of first Summer at our Malibu NSP. For most pond builders the solution to so-called String Algaeis more water circulation. This is not a solution. In fact, string Algae is part of the development of an ecosystem. It’s frustrating because it’s a visual nuisance. It is also fragments when it’s disturbed, and those fragments generate more string Algae. I’m fine with removing it, but do it carefully rolling up slowly on a pole is great. There are biologicals that also help stem the issue, but the best treatment is to let it run its course - after the first 4 years it will find an equilibrium. We have found netted straw bales help. Put them in at Winter and you may see strong abatement by Summer (you may pull them out then).

Plaster Completed! This is our Malibu NSP with beautifully tiled fountain leading to a lotus inspired Spa and finally the NSP. With luck tomorrow we will start up the Regeneration Pumps and prepare for plantings in a week or two. Plants are shipped as plugs from North Carolina. Every tile here was hand-fired and custom designed by the homeowner and her tile maker. Very nice! Congratulations to all our staff at California Natural Pools and Ojai Pool Store - and a big shout out to Kirk Olivas and crew!
