#OnThisDay At 5:37 p.m. on October 25th, 2003, the Cedar Fire was reported to the Monte Vista ECC (Emergency Command Center). The fire began on the Cleveland National Forest under a Red Flag Warning with humidity at less than 10% and persistent gusty Santa Ana winds. Firefighters were challenged with erratic, strong winds multiple days which fanned the flames where the fire burned at rates of up to 6,000 acres per hour. At the time, the Cedar Fire was the largest wildland fire in California history burning 280,278 acres.

#OnThisDay Gillespie Helitack Firefighters offloaded into the Sawday Fire in Ramona on October 24th, 2019. The blaze erupted shortly before 9:30 a.m. amid unseasonable heat and gusty Santa Ana conditions near Sawday Truck Trail and Littlepage Road, south of state Route 78 in the unincorporated Ballena community. The fast-moving wildfire blackened nearly 100 open acres between Ramona and Santa Ysabel, prompting evacuations as air and ground resources worked to subdue the wind-whipped flames. #ThenAndNow 1934 vs 2020 Ramona firefighters take a moment to recapture a picture taken 86 years ago. So many improvements in service and protective equipment have occurred in that time such as level of medical care, pre-emergency planning for fire attack, implementation of ICS (Incident Command System), and so much more. While there have been many improvements over the past several decades, it’s inevitable the fire service will be ever evolving. What will be the most significant advancements in the next 86 years? #OnThisDay The Witch Fire started in Witch Creek Canyon near San Ysabel, at 12:35 p.m. on October 21st, 2007. Powerful Santa Ana winds fanned the flames which quickly spread to Ramona, Rancho Bernardo, Poway, and Escondido. Locals in the San Pasqual Valley area reported wind gusts of over 100 mph where the fire jumped over Interstate 15 and continued west. It wasn't until 5 days later, the Santa Ana winds had finally subsided and the onshore flow had fully returned, slowing down the spread and aiding firefighters in their efforts to contain this fire and the remaining wildfires of the 2007 San Diego County Firestorms.

Anyone aspiring to the position of a chief officer in the fire service must start at the entry-level firefighter position (whether paid or volunteer) and must demonstrate a high level of leadership in the organization. To advance through the ranks, firefighters will require extra training, education, and certifications. Active growth within the department and community is a necessity as is going beyond expectations. Becoming a chief isn’t easy, but it is a highly rewarding career providing a vital service to the community. #leadership #passion #gotheextramile #hardworkdedication #community #chiefofficer
