I wasn’t planning on going back to Shasta Livestock, but a friend asked if I could be there to take some video for an article...so I happily obliged. When I fi...rst I arrived, there were few people and I wasn’t sure if there would be a good turnout. By 10 am it was standing room only. I’m not going to lie, it felt a little like another nail in the coffin for the future generations of cattlemen and women and it was tough for me to keep my composure. But the mood was far from somber. People laughed and joked and smiled and shook hands and hugged. Ellington Peek was like a celebrity. Everyone got in line to take their picture with him. I even saw him signing hats! Speaking of hats, they gave away hundreds! Commemorative wine and beer glasses were given to everyone in attendance along with calendars, stickers and other goodies with the familiar Shasta Livestock kill pen cow on them. Ellington spoke briefly between singles and pen lots. He was a man of few words. He thanked his family and everyone who helped keep Shasta Livestock in operation for many years, but was much more interested in keeping the sale going than appeasing the masses with sentiments. The highlight of the day for me was watching them auction off a Charolais heifer for the Andy Peek Scholarship. She was to be auctioned off 5 times and altogether brought in $60,000 in donations. All in all, it was a beautiful goodbye. I’m not sure what lies in store for the auction yard grounds, the town of Cottonwood or the future of animal agriculture...not just in California, but nationwide. There are so many uncertainties. But one thing is certain: Shasta Livestock will be greatly missed. As another chapter in this book of life is closed, we look forward to what the future brings, place faith in God above and wish the Peek family all the best.
