March 21 is International Day of Forests. It’s a great day to visit a Demonstration State Forest or any one of California’s diverse and beautiful forests near y...ou. If you can’t get to the woods today, go outside and find the trees that make up the urban forest in your local park. We all depend on healthy forests for clean water and air, climate benefits, wildlife habitat and recreation opportunities. Forests also provide lumber and plywood for the homes we live in and a myriad of other forest products. #InternationalDayofForests #CALFIRE_ForestHealth See more
The annual Tsunami Warning Communications Test in Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino counties will be conducted on Wednesday, March 24th between 11 am and noon.... The test will interrupt TV and radio broadcasts and turn on tsunami sirens in some areas. Additionally, local jurisdictions may test their reverse calling systems and the Civil Air Patrol will conduct a test of their airplane mounted broadcast system (weather depending). Be ready and remember, it’s only a test! #NWCATsunamiTest2021

With the decrease in temperatures, we're seeing an increase in flue fires. Make sure your fireplace or wood stove is working properly to prevent creosote buildup and flue fires. Stay warm but stay safe!!

When we are not fighting fires, we are putting forth every effort to prevent them. This includes having our fuel crews remove the dry and dead vegetation that leads to fast moving destructive #wildfires.

As California starts to experience colder weather, you may want to enjoy the warmth of an outdoor fire pit. Make sure you are being #FireSafe by checking with your local Air Quality Management District for burn restrictions and keeping furniture a safe distance from the flames.
Yesterday, CAL FIRE Mattole Station, Honeydew Fire and Telegraph Ridge practiced some mobile attack and prescribed burn tactics. We are always training with our local fire departments to keep up with strategic training. Here are some pictures taken in the Honeydew area. #WorkHardTrainHard #VolunteerFireFighters #TelegraphRidge #HoneydewFire #ReadyForWildfire

CAL FIRE assisted California State Parks at Prairie Creek State Park with a planned 122- acre prescribed burn. The prescribed burn consisted of two plots along Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway. Frost from low overnight temperatures delayed ignition, but by midday conditions were favorable for the desired effects. The intent of the burn is to retain native grass species and habitat for elk. California State Parks staff commanded the incident, provided for traffic control a...long the parkway, and provided firefighting staff to conduct firing and holding operations, as well as ensure the safety of park visitors. Personnel and equipment from Redwood National Park assisted as well. CAL FIRE provided engines, hand crews, and overheat personnel to assist. #PrescribedBurns #WildlandFirefighters #CaliforniaStateParks #ReadyForWildfire See more
Yesterday, A water salute and red carpet treatment for our retiring Deputy Chief - Operations Kurt Dernedde. He concluded his career in AA120 as the Church Air Attack today, dropped a tanker, and returned to Rohnerville for a proper send off. Kurt made a difference in the Aviation Program, the Humboldt Del Norte Unit and the Department. His leadership and sense of humor will be missed. We wish him the best and hope his retirement is as successful as his career.... #WorkHardStayHumble #AviationLife #FlyingSquirrel #FireFighter #CALFIREHUU See more
Yesterday around 4:00 PM, the CAL FIRE Humboldt Del Norte Unit received report of a fire in the community of Pecwan, on Highway 169. The fire involved a structure as well as vegetation. Multiple agencies responded including: Salyer Volunteer Fire Department, Hoopa Wildland Fire Department, Willow Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Yurok Wildland Fire Department, and CAL FIRE sent multiple resources. Despite the challenging conditions of long response times and poor radi...o communications in that area, firefighters were able to stop the fire’s forward progress at approximately 6:00 PM. The fire is currently holding at 1 acres of vegetation and one structure was fully involved. Crews remain at scene for an extended period to construct control lines and complete extinguishment of the vegetation and structure. Firefighters can be expected to be seen in the area for the next several days to ensure there are no hidden pockets of smoldering fuel. The cause of the fire is under #ReadyForWildfire #WildlandFireFighters #SafetyStartsWithYou See more
