For the past three years the Little Tokyo Community (Nonprofits, small businesses, property owners, CD14 and other city partners) came together to put on the Haunted Little Tokyo Block party.We had to postpone this years party until next year, so join us then!!! This year, we’re doing socially distanced scavenger hunt / trick or treating with 5 different locations throughout Little Tokyo.We’ll be handing out candy via the dopest looking candy slides you’ve ever se...en (made by the V talented Farrah) and there will be prizes and gift cards for those who participate! World Coffee Day Ok technically it is International Coffee Day but World sounds better. Haha, anywhoots, Camber Coffee asked us if we wanted to celebrate it with them and we were honored to join the party... In doing so we are taking today to help spread the word about the dangers that face the coffee plant that we all take for granted. Loooong story short the changing climate and the very small genetic diversity are huge risks that threaten our beloved coffee cherry... productions plant. So to celebrate World Coffee Day we are giving out free cups of an Ethiopian Coffee by way of @cambercoffee (at Little Tokyo & USC Village only). Ethiopia is of critical importance to the entire world arabica evolved in the forests here and it is the wellspring of coffee genetic diversity. This lot comes from the Raro Boda washing station. Farmers in this region grow their coffee either in semi-forest conditions, where they prune and tend to wild native coffee trees under a forest canopy, or in garden conditions, where coffee trees are cultivated and tended to near a farmer’s home. All of the coffee here is grown at extremely high altitude, between 1950 2250 masl, and is dried on raised beds. In the cup, we taste notes of nectarine, pineapple, refined sugar, and blackberry. $10 from every purchase goes to supporting the global, collaborative work of World Coffee Research to ensure the future of coffee. There are many things that make Little Tokyo extremely special. One of those things are the legacy businesses that have been around longer than many of us have been alive. Many of you know the person at the center of this photo... Mr. Yoshi! When we first opened in 2011 (this is James again, writing in 1st person) I used to close up the cafe every night and would leave the store well past eleven o’clock, every night. The only other person around, consiste...ntly, at that time was Yoshi. Usually he was the one telling me to get home safely because he was staying later. He always came over and asked how business was and always gave me words of encouragement telling me to focus on good taste and good service and to work hard and be patient. In some ways he was a father figure to me during the early days of Dulce. I will never forget those days and moments. It wasn’t for a couple of years before I got to eat at his restaurant and understand the history behind the place. This is the first Shabu Shabu restaurant in North America and families have been coming here for generations. When we first opened I saw people waiting 2-3 hours to have a coveted seat at that iconic U-shaped counter. When I finally got to eat here I started to notice parents with their Kids at the counter. Overhearing conversations, I realized that these parents had been coming to Shabu Shabu House from the time they were kids, just like they were also brought by their parents.
