Thursday, Feb. 11 marks International Day of Women and Girls in Science! Today, and every day, we celebrate the DWR employees who are breaking down stereotypes and encouraging cis, trans women and girls to enter science related fields. Today we live in a world with so many less barriers to becoming what we want. There will be times when you are the only woman in the room or class but you will feel connected to the group based on your passion for science. The more women in s...cience the more normal it becomes. Let’s normalize women and mothers in all careers. says Robin Carter, Environmental Scientist for DWR’s Oroville Field Division. Participation in science, technology and innovation for cis, trans women and girls of all ages is important for achieving gender equality and empowerment. Women like Robin are helping to remove these barriers, and we celebrate them in creating new paths! #WomenInScience #February11

Happy Veterans Week! The military taught me all about teamwork and its importance. This is something that DWR embraces and encourages wholeheartedly. DWR is filled with individuals that are ready and willing to help another when needed and that is the type of work environment that promotes improvement and forward progress. -- Brittany Broyhill, Staff Sergeant, United States Air Force and Staff Services Analyst for DWR To all the men and women who have served, thank you fo...r your service and sacrifice. Happy National Apprenticeship Week! The Department of Water Resources celebrates the next generation of DWR employees. The DWR apprenticeship program prepares apprentices for a career in the hydroelectric industry, combining hands-on-learning, classroom study, and home study with supervised on-the-job training. Upon completion, apprentices are guaranteed a full-time journey-level position with DWR in their field of study. The apprenticeship classes teach us the theories an...d basic fundamentals of our specific crafts, but working with the journeymen in my own field division really helped me learn the specifics about the equipment we operate at DWR, said Laura Souza, apprentice program graduate and hydroelectric plant-operator at DWR’s Delta Field Division. The program taught me everything I needed to know you don’t have to have a background in these crafts, just a willingness to learn. DWR has published a summary report on the Oroville Dam Safety Comprehensive Needs Assessment (CNA), initiated in January 2018 to identify dam safety and operational needs following reconstruction of the spillways damaged in February 2017. A team of experts, including an Independent Review Board (IRB) of dam safety experts, determined that the Oroville Dam Complex is safe to operate and no urgent repairs are needed. Since conditions can change over time, DWR will conduct ongoi...ng monitoring and assessment to maintain the safety and reliability of the complex. Public safety is at the core of DWR’s mission, and we are committed to continually evaluating the performance and safety of State Water Project facilities, including Oroville Dam, said DWR Director Karla Nemeth. The Comprehensive Needs Assessment report is an important step in our efforts to ensure the ongoing safety and reliability of facilities that provide water and flood control for millions of Californians. The report will be presented to the Commission on Friday, November 13, 2020. That meeting will be held virtually. 60 years ago, the Election of 1960 became a turning point in how California would deliver water across the state. On Nov. 8, 1960, voters passed a ballot measure to fund the California State Water Project: a state-built, multi-purpose, user-financed water system that serves as the backbone of California to this day. The State Water Project, one of the greatest engineering achievements of the 20th Century, has made it possible for California to become the nation’s number one f...ood producer and fifth-largest economy in the world. Starting this month for the next year, we will be celebrating the SWP turning 60. Assessments and evaluations of the Castaic Dam spillway in Los Angeles County began today as part of a statewide effort to reduce risks from major earthquakes or extreme weather events to State Water Project (SWP) infrastructure. Castaic Dam’s spillway assessments will help DWR prioritize further maintenance and potential improvements to continue the safe and reliable operation of State Water Project facilities, said Ted Craddock, DWR Deputy Director of the State Water Project. The Castaic facilities play an important role in water supply management in Southern California and also provide recreational opportunities for surrounding communities. DWR has moved one step closer to starting construction on the Delta’s largest multi-benefit tidal restoration and flood improvement project Lookout Slough (LOS). The project will restore approximately 3,000 acres of tidal wetland in the Cache Slough region, creating habitat that is beneficial to native fish and wildlife. In addition to restoring tidal wetlands, the project will also create a new setback levee to provide residents in the surrounding area greater flood protec...tion. The final Environmental Impact Report (EIR) has been released and certified, clearing the project to move forward with completing the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) process and getting approvals for final construction permits.
