CA State Parks 04.11.2020

Archaeology is conducted in all of our parks almost every day! Here at our State Parks, we have been celebrating Archaeology Month this October! Archaeology Month is a national program to promote the preservation of our country’s heritage. California Archaeology Month is sponsored by the Society for California Archaeology (SCA), observed in October to integrate with California’s kindergarten through Grade 12 curriculum on Native American and California history. What is Archae...ology? Archaeology is the study of the past through things people leave behind. Examples could be the art people made, tools they used, and food they ate. Who are Archaeologists? Archaeologists are anthropologists, meaning they study people. They are not geologists (who study rocks and minerals) or paleontologists (who study very ancient reptiles). Archaeologists look at artifacts and sites to investigate how people lived in the past. Why is Archaeology Important? Archaeology protects and preserves the past, but this cannot be done without your help. For an archaeologist to do their job, all the pieces of the past must be in the exact location as they were placed or dropped 50 or even thousands of years ago. This is what is called the artifacts context. If you remove a bottle, ceramic sherd, broken glass, or projectile point (arrowhead) it takes away from the history of the people, the location, and from the living communities of today. So please, when visiting our parks do not pick up or take any items home. Please leave them exactly where you found them so that archaeologists can do their job to piece together the puzzle of our past.

Do the Stingray Shuffle! Don’t step on a stingray and be sure drag your feet on the sand to give them time to swim away. If you are stung, contact a lifeguard for first aid.
