Binational Health Week/Fresno County Taskforce

Binational Health Week (BHW) is the largest mobilization efforts in the Americas to improve the health and well-being of the underserved Latino population living in the United States and Canada. During BHW, federal, state and local government agencies, community-based organizations and thousands of volunteers come together in the month of October to conduct a series of health promotion and health education activities including workshops, insurance referrals, vaccinations and ...medical screenings. In an effort to provide extended assistance, we also provide immigration and educational services at every event. BHW fosters community solidarity by bringing together existing resources and thousands of volunteers working together for a common goal. The events are coordinated by the collaboration among community and government agencies from the U.S., Mexico and other Latin American countries with the purpose of reaching out to the most disadvantaged and vulnerable people, especially those without medical coverage. This year the main health topics that will be adressed are HIV/AIDs, Diabetes, Occupational Health, Influenza, and Access to Health Insurance. BHW main partners include the Secretariats of Health and Foreign Affairs of Mexico, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, as well as the Institute for Mexicans Abroad, the Mexican Social Security Institute, the National Secretariat for Migrants in Ecuador, the Colombia Nos Une Program, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, several Departments of Public Health, the Council of Mexican Federations in North America, and the Health Initiative of the Americas, a program of the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health. Our Mission: The 559 Mural Project is a collective of activists advocating for artists and the arts to address racial injustice and social & economic inequities... in the rural communities in Fresno County. Mural unveiling celebration taking place on Friday, October 30, 2020, at 5:30 PM at La Estrella Market in Selma - exact address 2345 Whitson Ave, Selma CA 93662. De Colores Mural Description: Our mural theme is centered on De Colores, a popular traditional Spanish-language folk song widely recognized among Latino and Spanish speaking cultures. De Colores is a song that celebrates all of life’s creation, from the joyful to the sorrowful, and evokes the beauty of a diverse and inclusive world. This message is delivered in the imagery of Chicano, Mexican, and Mexican-American civil rights activists, including Dolores Huerta & Cesar Chavez, of the 1960s and 70s to demonstrate that the fight for equity and justice is an ongoing journey. From these activists, we can draw the line to the struggles of 2020, with the Black Lives Matter movement and the magnified inequities that communities of color are facing in the midst of a global pandemic. The 559 Team The team is composed of myself - Selena Martinez Mak as Co-Founder & Executive Director, Sirina Renee Resendez who is also Co-founder & Chief Operating Officer, and Keanna Louise Salazar who is our new Marketing & PR Director.
