Superintendent's Reopening Update: 11.23.20 Dear BUSD Families, Students, and Employees: An alarming increase in COVID cases in L.A. Dear Friends of BUSD, As you know, BUSD has experienced significant cuts over the last two years, and more cuts are coming. We continue to work hard to deliver a quality education to all of our BUSD students, but we need your help. It has long been documented that robust schools contribute to their communities' health and wellbeing by fostering innovation and promoting leadership and partnership opportunities. Here in Burbank, we are proud of our schools' great reputation an...d the positive impact they have on our communities, but all of these achievements require adequate funding. Across California, we see districts struggle with similar, potentially devastating, budget shortfalls. In Burbank, we have tried to keep as many cuts as possible from the classroom, but years of underfunding by the State have led to devastating cuts. When the parcel tax did not pass this spring, many of you asked if there was any other way to support our schools. Shortly after, the pandemic swept through our community, altering every facet of our lives. So much has changed since, but our dedication to our students' future has remained strong as we shifted our focus to delivering remote instruction to the roughly 15,000 students in our district. Each of us can help our children by showing our support. Today, I am here to tell you that you CAN support our schools through the Burbank Arts & Education Foundation's Better Together campaign! I can't tell you how excited I was to hear that Burbank Educational Foundation and Burbank Arts for All Foundation have come together to raise much-needed funds for Burbank schools as one united fundraising organization - Burbank Arts & Education Foundation. Burbank's students and teachers have benefited greatly over the years from their financial support, advocacy work, and community leadership. The Burbank Arts & Education Foundation asks our friends, neighbors, and local business owners to pledge their support directly on behalf of Burbank kids. A recurring donation of $14 a month or an annual donation of $170 will help us during these challenging financial times. Please sign up today at this link (https://interland3.donorperfect.net/weblink/WebLink.aspx) to give $14 monthly, or whatever amount fits your family budget. Even a $5 monthly donation will make a big difference. Thank you, Matt Hill, Superintendent Burbank Unified School District

Burbank Unified Teacher of the Year Named a State Finalist The Burbank Unified School District is thrilled to announce that Ericca Dent, the Burbank Unified Teacher of the Year, has been named a 2021 California Teacher of the Year Finalist. Ms. Dent teaches second grade at Joaquin Miller Elementary School and was recently named a Los Angeles County Teacher of the Year. Miller Elementary School principal, Judy Hession, was delighted with the news that Ms. Dent had been selecte...d as a California Teacher of the Year finalist: Ericca brings such positivity to her work. She gets to know her students individually and works hard to build a sense of caring and community within the classroom, even when that classroom is a virtual one. In a year that has presented all of us with previously unimagined challenges, Ericca has excelled at making her students feel connected and supported. Ms. Dent is also a founding member of the District’s Justice and Equity Team (JET) committee and was recently chosen as BUSD’s first Diversity Champion (www.burbankusd.org/Page/2971) her work to incorporate diversity and inclusion in her teaching and for helping other BUSD teachers by creating a space and a toolbox of resources to reflect and discuss the journey toward antiracist educating. Superintendent Matt Hill expressed his pride in Ms. Dent’s accomplishments, We are so grateful to Ms. Dent for the passion and enthusiasm she brings to the profession of teaching and for her commitment to her students and fellow educators. Dear Families and Employees, We have some great news - Burbank Arts for All Foundation and Burbank Educational Foundation have merged to create a new organization called the Burbank Arts & Education Foundation. These two educational foundations have a long history of positively impacting and providing support to the BUSD students through their robust grant-giving, advocacy, programming, and community engagement programs. Burbank's students and teachers have benefitted greatly... over the years from the financial support, advocacy work, and community leadership of these outstanding nonprofits. The new Burbank Arts & Education Foundation will continue to support innovation and excellence in our schools, including arts education, STEM programs, student safety and wellness, and other needs within the Burbank Unified School District (BUSD). Like many other school districts in California, BUSD faces a significant budget crisis that will have a devastating impact on our community's students. Burbank Arts & Education Foundation will leverage the assets of our community to fill gaps and level the playing field - supporting creativity, equity, inclusion, and diversity for all BUSD students. Burbank Educational Foundation was established in 1982 to raise money for the Burbank Unified School District (BUSD). In recent years, the Foundation has provided more than $437,000 in funds to BUSD in support of STEM programs, teacher classroom grants, SAT Prep classes, and more, to benefit as many students as possible. Burbank Arts for All Foundation was founded in 2006 to ensure that every student received quality arts education as part of their core curriculum. To date, the Foundation has given more than $758,000 in funds to Burbank schools supporting a wide variety of visual, media, and performing art programs, artist in residency programs, arts integration programs, professional development for teachers, facility upgrades, and strategic planning for Burbank Unified School District's Arts for All Plan. Burbank Unified School District is glad to see these two great nonprofits merging into one. We are confident that they will continue to provide opportunities for our schools and students attending them. The Foundation is currently running a launch campaign, BETTER TOGETHER, and if you would like to support their work, please click HERE (https://tinyurl.com/y3gq8jkc). The district is thrilled that these two organizations have joined together to ensure a brighter future for our students and our city. We look forward to the Burbank Arts & Education Foundation's support and partnership as we tackle the challenges facing our students together. Thank you, Matt Hill

Superintendent's Reopening Update: 7.2.20 Dear Families, Students, and Employees: I hope you are all able to have a safe and relaxing Fourth of July weekend.... Reopening of School 2020-21 The Reopening Committee has created an overview document highlighting the work so far. You can review the document at this link: https://tinyurl.com/yaz7gb5t Please note that this information is subject to change based on local health conditions and our negotiations with our collective bargaining partners. We are still waiting on the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health orders to be released for education. We will be reviewing these orders and will be updating our plans as necessary. These orders are the official health documents that we must abide by as we reopen schools. Here are a couple of key updates for this week: - Grading: Regardless of the instructional model families select, all students will receive traditional standards-based or letter grades next year. - Hybrid Schedules: TK-12 will offer a Monday-Thursday AM/PM model, with Friday 100% at-home learning. For middle and high school all six classes will be taught the whole semester. Please see the schedules/minutes section. - Distance Learning Model: We are still exploring a couple of options for our distance learning model. Additional information will be shared shortly. - Model Selection: Within the next couple of weeks you will receive an email asking you to indicate which model (either hybrid or 100% distance learning) you will select for the fall. We realize that there are still many questions you may have and health conditions will change. However, we need to begin to start planning our class rosters and schedules for August 17. If you do not complete the model selection, you will automatically be placed in the hybrid model. Additional information will be presented during our July 16 Board of Education meeting at 7pm. Finally, you can watch the Board meetings at this link: https://www.burbankusd.org/Page/1945 Thursday, June 25, 7pm Special Board Meeting Budget Adoption Reopening of School 2020-21 The Reopening Committee is working together and reviewing feedback from parents and employees to develop the best instructional models for the fall. We want to stress again that the 100% distance learning option will be a revised model and will not be the same as the spring. We will be offering a robust and rigorous curriculum to the degree possible and this will include assessments and letter grades. For those families who want to select the in-person option, we realize that many want a full-time model. The current Los Angeles County Department of Health Order does not make it feasible for us to offer a full-time model. That is why we are developing a hybrid model where students will go to school half-day and the other half-day will be learning from home. We understand this model creates child care challenges - we are working with our City and non-profit partners to identify ways to mitigate child care needs. More information will be forthcoming. Current information is available on this website https://www.burbankusd.org/Reopening. You may also email your comments to [email protected]. We also want additional information regarding our draft models. Please complete the following survey by June 26th to help with our planning (you will receive the survey multiple times, you only need to complete it once for each child). Have I done everything I could in my personal and professional life to prevent these types of murders from happening? The honest answer is no. I strongly believe we ne...Continue reading

Reading can also be a fun and imaginative activity for kids, which opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for them, says Pena. Dear Families, Students, and Employees: Budget Keep up the advocacy! Your advocacy is working! The Senate is working on a budget proposal that would prevent cuts to education and the Assembly is also working on a proposal: read more at https://www.latimes.com//california-lawmakers-gavin-newsom ... The legislature has until June 15th to submit a budget to the Governor. Click here to email your legislators: https://p2a.co/lY0Zw5J Tell them your personal stories and give them solutions that they can implement instead of cuts. For example they can use the State reserves, Rainy Day fund, cash deferrals, and/or delay or reduce school district payments to CalSTRS and CalPERS. We will continue to discuss the budget situation during a series of Board meetings. We have also pushed the Budget Adoption to June 25th so that we have more time to advocate to prevent these reductions. You can watch the Board meetings at this link: https://www.burbankusd.org/Page/1945 Thursday, June 4, at 7pm Regular Board meeting, Budget Update Wednesday, June 10, at 7pm Study Session regarding the Budget Thursday, June 18, at 7pm Regular Board Meeting, Budget Update Thursday, June 25, at 7pm Special Board Meeting Budget Adoption Reopening of School 2020-21 You should have received a survey from Robyn Anders this week to collect your feedback about your experience this spring. You can also access the survey at this link: https://docs.google.com//1FAIpQLSfonyCDDGGJ-hXh6F/viewform This is a high-level survey; we will continue to solicit more detailed feedback over the next several weeks. The Reopening Committee will kick-off next week and will begin by reviewing the Los Angeles County Office of Education at this link: https://www.lacoe.edu/Home/School-Reopening and will begin to use the framework to develop a BUSD specific plan. Next week, we will launch a website that will house all of this information and will allow you to continue to provide feedback. By continuing to work together, we will build a stronger BUSD. Superintendent's Update: 5.21.20 Dear Families, Students, and Employees: This has been quite the year, but we have overcome many challenges by working together. We have many more challenges to address, but I have been inspired by what we have accomplished.... First of all, congratulations to all of our graduates! I have been so moved by watching and hearing our student reflections this week during their ceremonies. Classified Employee Week As we end the week, the Board of Education and I want to extend again our sincere appreciation to our classified employees for all of their hard work. They have definitely risen to the challenge. Burbank Library Summer Reading Program & Other Enrichment Resources The Burbank Library is offering an online summer reading program. This free program encourages participants to develop a habit of reading daily and helps students practice their reading skills over the summer months. To learn more, visit: https://burbanklibrary.org//upl/2020-03/SR2020-Schools.pdf. We also will continue to post enrichment resources that students and families can access this summer on our District website: www.burbankusd.org Budget As discussed during the last Board of Education meeting, the Governor’s budget proposal would result in over $13 million in cuts to Burbank Schools. Communities across the state are raising their voices to prevent these cuts. Email your legislators at this link: https://p2a.co/lY0Zw5J. We will discuss the budget situation during a series of Board meetings. Dear Families, Students, and Employees: This week we celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week and Day of the School Nurse. Now, more than ever, we need to continue to show our appreciation, not just for a day or a week, but every day of the year. Child Care... As you have probably heard, Los Angeles County is moving to Stage 2 of the reopening process. This means there will be a greater need for child care in our community. Our currently enrolled families are being surveyed so that we can determine how many child care locations we need to open. More information will be sent directly to families over the next several days from our Child Development Office. Reopening of School 2020-21 We are continuing to research what other countries, states and districts are doing for the reopening of schools. We are planning multiple scenarios that will require flexibility from the state and will also depend on the state budget (please see below). We know that education will be different than our former school model and the distance learning model we just implemented. As we receive more guidance, we will seek your feedback and will share more details about these models. Even though it can feel overwhelming at times, we are going to take this crisis as an opportunity to be creative and re-imagine education to meet the needs of our students, families, and employees. Budget Today, the California Department of Finance and Governor Newsom released a bleak memo previewing the May Revision prior to the Governor’s announcement next week. The California School Board Association has made it easy for us to stress the need to protect public education funding. Use this link to email your legislators: https://p2a.co/lY0Zw5J On Tuesday, May 19th at 7pm the Board of Education will have a Special Board meeting to discuss budget scenarios and discuss fundraising priorities. You may watch the meeting at this link: https://www.burbankusd.org/Page/1945 By continuing to work together, we will build a stronger BUSD. The next District update will be sent Thursday, May 14th.
