R. BURNETT MILLER R. BURNETT MILLER PARK R. Burnett Miller The central park within McKinley Village is named for R. Burnett Miller, a civic leader who has supported the arts through his philanthropy and public leadership. As part of his life long passion for the arts, Burnett has led efforts to, among other things, raise funds for the Crocker Art Museum, the Sacramento History Center, the Sacramento Poetry Center, the Center for Contemporary Art, and many other worthy causes.... Born in Sacramento in 1923, he served with distinction in the armed services during World War II, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and, as part of the U.S. 11th Armored Division, liberated the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria. He was awarded a Purple Heart and the Silver Star and appeared in the award winning PBS documentary The War directed by Ken Burns. Following his graduation from Georgetown University, Burnett returned to Sacramento and joined his family’s lumber company, Burnett and Sons Planing Mill and Lumber Company, which was founded in 1869. He served on the Sacramento City Council from 1971-1977, representing the 3rd District, in which McKinley Village is located. In 1982, Burnett was selected by the City Council to serve as Mayor of the City of Sacramento through the end of 1983, filling out the term of Mayor Phil Isenberg who was elected to the State Assembly. Included within R. Burnett Miller Park will be the artwork being created by Gina Werfel. The park and the artwork are currently planned to be completed in the spring of 2017.
