Today is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day. I will be on Instagram Live with @ergobaby at 2pm PST today to talk more. (Follow me @burdtherapy on Instagram to watch.) In the meantime, I’m tagging just a few of the accounts you may find helpful. This was quickly off the top of my head, so I’m sure I’m forgetting someone important. Please tag them in the comments. Bonus: swipe to preview some of the exercises in The Postpartum Depression Workbook around #stillbir...th and #pregnancyafterloss. You may also find the sections on the Reproductive Story m, #miscarriage and Disenfranchised Grief helpful. @rtzhope @sistersinloss @brokenbrownegg @starlegacyfoundation @pregnancyafterlosssupport @postpartumsupportinternational #infantloss #infantlossawarenessmonth #infantlossawareness #pregnancyloss #pregnancylossawareness #pregnancylosssupport #therapistsofinstagram

GIVEAWAY TIME I can't believe my book starts shipping Tuesday! Writing a book is such a solitary process. I checked in often with editors and consulted with a local reproductive psychiatry expert, but for the most part, it was something I did alone. So I can't tell you how excited I am to imagine the workbook in people's hands... not to mention actually making a difference in people's lives. ... On that note: 1. You can enter to win a copy here: https://www.burdtherapy.com/giveaway-and-first-reviews-the/ 2. I couldn't pick from all the amazing reviews, so visit them here: https://amzn.to/3nHaGUr

Tomorrow! Join @psi_ca_chapter, @climboutofthedarknesssandiego and @drkendraflorescarter in a virtual walk to bring light to perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. I have participated in past walks with @postpartumhealthalliance @sugarnightnight @jenfish21 @bethanywarrenlcsw @men.excel and so many local advocates that I know I won’t be able to tag everyone properly. On Facebook, find the group California Climb Out of the Darkness to join along.

Sharing more of the Q and A section of The Postpartum Workbook, which ships Tuesday from California. Talking about the postpartum depression symptom we rarely discuss: anger/rage. Letting you know where to enter a giveaway for a free (paperback) copy on Instagram as well as burdtherapy.com/blog. And never mind the kid interruptions - real life as a working, online schooling, co-op podding parent on display.

What is our worst fear? 1 in 5 women experience Postpartum Depression (PPD). Rates are higher for people of color. And the pandemic has doubled rates for everyone. Therapists and others that care for birthing people are most worried about losing someone to suicide, one of the worst consequences of untreated or under-treated PPD. When I was researching for The Postpartum Depression Workbook, I found research evidence that 1 in 5 women with PPD have thoughts of suicide.... To be honest, as a therapist, I think *thoughts* might be even more common. As we finish out #SuicidePreventionMonth, I want to talk about the difference between Thoughts, Intent, and Action. Thoughts are just that. They likely stay in your head. But they fester there. Many people judge themselves for dark or hopeless thinking. Society has this narrow expectation of what good should look like. Some new parent are afraid that people will judge them, or worse, that someone will think them unfit. But I know that it takes strength to ask for help! Good parents are willing to ask for support, even if it can feel humbling. In therapy, I will almost always assess if someone has thoughts of suicide, intent to harm themselves, or is at risk for a dangerous act. They are very different! Although thoughts of suicide are the single biggest risk factor for suicidal behavior, thoughts do not automatically mean you will act on them. But they are a very clear signal that you need more support. In the US, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1- 800-273-8255, or text 741741. (See my post a few weeks back for international numbers.) Ask for help. Ask a friend how she is truly doing. 1st slide: @postpartumsupportintwrnational with some of the things women sometimes say when they are starting to feel hopeless. 2nd slide: educational opportunities compiled by @mmhla2 from @2020_mom @themarcesociety @momcongress @shadesofyoushadesofme See more
