Here's a recap of what our History Team did over the summer, led by our Senior Historian, Stacey Salinas. "My team of interns helped the History branch of the Bulosan Center collect oral history interviews about the Filipinx experience from an intergenerational perspective. Along with interviewing Filipinx youth and elders, my interns also transcribed previous oral histories conducted by the senior historian, Stacey Salinas. Their transcriptions will help allow future schola...rs conduct research on primary sources that speak to four generations of Filipinx in America." #Bulosancenter #FilipinoAmericanHistoryMonth #FAHM2020 *shoutout to the Bulosan Interns (Elise Israel and Tara Rino) for doing such wonderful oral history interviews and adding to our Filipinx family histories!

Bulosan Center debuts the "Profits Enslave the World" digital exhibit! In honor of Filipino American History Month and the theme of "the history of Filipino American Activism," the Bulosan Center curated a digital exhibit commemorating Philip Vera Cruz's poem "Profits Enslave the World." This digital exhibit contextualizes Philip Vera Cruz's poem to the early Filipino American immigrant experience, focusing from the 1900s to the 1970s. Although not a biographical exhibit abou...t Philip Vera Cruz, this exhibit connects the poem's stanzas to labor migration, economic disparities, and worker exploitation. Preceding each act is a reading of the poem's stanzas narrated by Stacey Salinas and closes up with an artistic analysis of the contemporary labor struggle set to Dr. Jason Magabo Perez's poem titled "Elsewhere." This exhibit was curated by Manny De Leon and Jason Sarmiento, graphic design by Wesley Sosa, and project guidance from Dr. Robyn Rodriguez. To view the exhibit, please go to tinyurl.com/bcPETW

October 25th is Larry Itliong Day! Established in 2015 by California Assembly Bill 7 (and introduced by Assemblymember Rob Bonta), Larry Itliong Day honors this often-overlooked labor leader's life and achievements. Larry Itliong (1913-1977) was a labor organizer who spearheaded efforts to organize California’s Filipino farmworkers in the mid-twentieth century. His efforts, along with those of his chief supporter Philip Vera Cruz, convinced Caeser Chavez to become involved i...n organizing for California’s farmworkers. He is perhaps most famous for leading the Delano Grape Strike of 1965, which was a massive strike conducted mostly by Filipino farm workers that lobbied for wages equal to the federal minimum wage. The general public largely forgot Itliong in the wake of Chavez’s meteoric rise in popularity, but in recent years Filipino Americans have made great efforts to resurrect his contribution to labor movements. To hear Itliong's life story in his own words, please listen to the Larry Itliong Oral History Interview, made accessible by Mignon Geli and the Labor Archives and Research Center, San Francisco State University https://californiarevealed.org/islando/object/cavpp%3A74313 Photo credit: Bob Fitch Photography Archive, Stanford University Libraries, https://exhibits.stanford.edu/fitch/catalog/my361kr4319
