Breaking news - Two awards! One of the 5-year-olds in our emergency homeless shelter received two awards today: One for outstanding math achievement and one for best attendance! "We are so proud! said our shelter manager. The teacher said "you always go above and beyond what is required - congratulations!" A bright spot to share with you all as everyone continues to learn, adapt, and live through a pandemic. ... This is love. This is change. This is the dedication of the moms at our shelters, our staff & our leadership. *we are keeping the identity of the child and shelter anonymous for safety* #BuildingFutures #endhomelessness #essentialworkers #covid #distancelearning #5yearold #hope

But one thing is certain. If we merge mercy with might then LOVE becomes our legacy, and CHANGE, our children’s birthright Amanda Gorman, youngest inaugural poet in US history Building Futures also takes a pledge this next four years to continue to care for, advocate for, and empower the women, children and vulnerable individuals who we serve. Four years and beyond. #inaguration2021 #democracy #hope. ... We applaud these women who take the stage. These women who enter the stage from a place of disadvantage and marginalization, and SHINE. And touch our hearts and our minds. And LEAD US. Congratulations to our Oakland’s own, Vice President Kamala Harris, and the powerful Amanda Gorman, poet laureate. We see you. We applaud you. Today begins Domestic Violence Awareness Month! Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) evolved from the 'Day of Unity' in October 1981 observed by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to... connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became an entire week devoted to a range of activities conducted at the local, state, and national levels. The activities conducted were as varied and diverse as the program sponsors but had common themes: mourning those who have died because of domestic violence, celebrating those who have survived, and connecting those who work to end violence. -- From Domestic Violence Awareness Month History by NRCDV, who adapted it from NCADV’s 1996 Domestic Violence Awareness Month Resource Manual #DVAM2020 #PowerUp #DVAM
