Some think that because they do not have a family history of breast cancer, they cannot or will not develop breast cancer. They may gain a false sense of security and not worry about those annual mammograms. However, 70-80% of breast cancers have nothing to do with our genetic makeup. The top two risk factors for developing breast cancer are being a woman and aging. - Dr. Lisa E. Guerra #Breastlink #BreastCancer #BreastHealth #BreastSurgeon www.Breastlink.com

This year more than ever it’s vital that we properly, and frequently, wash our hands to stop the transmission of harmful germs. Let’s all do our part to keep each other healthy. The CDC recommends following these five steps when washing our hands: 1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.... 2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. 3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the Happy Birthday song from beginning to end twice. 4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. 5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. #NationalHandwashingAwarenessWeek

Rates of breast cancer in the U.S. vary by race and ethnicity, so do rates of breast cancer deaths. According to the CDC, breast cancer death rates are 40% higher among black women than white women. It’s important to be diligent with having yearly screening mammograms, as early detection leads to more successful treatment.

In these extraordinary times, it’s more important than ever to be kind to yourself and make self-care a priority. Excessive stress can lead to an increase in a variety of health problems and depression, but self-care helps to sharpen mental and physical health, betters self-esteem, helps with stress management and leads to better wellbeing overall. Self-care doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. Self-care is not self-indulgent. Self-care is not selfish. Here are a few ways to incorporate self-care into your daily life.

"Women at a higher risk for breast cancer, should begin their screening mammograms at an earlier age, approximately ten years prior to the first degree relative (mother, sister, daughter) who was diagnosed pre-menopausal. In addition both genetic risk assessment and testing should be obtained." Dr. Tchaiko Parris

3D Mammography is the state of the art mammogram technology that improves our ability to detect breast cancers. It has some distinct advantages over conventional 2D mammograms, most notably is its ability to create a 3D or volumetric image of the breast. If a 2D mammogram is like looking at the floor plan of a home, then a 3D mammogram allows you to open the doors and look inside, affording a more detailed evaluation. Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day #BRAday Every woman fighting breast cancer deserves to know her options for reconstruction. Many women are unaware that it is a federal law that health insurers cover breast reconstructive procedures. Although reconstruction following a mastectomy or lumpectomy is not for every woman, we believe every woman should be informed of the options she is legally entitled to. #Breastlink #BreastCancerReconstructionAwareness
