It's been a marvelous month for Breakwater Studios, but this may take the cake! That's My Jazz just won the 2020 James Beard Award for Best Documentary. What a spectacular honor, bolstered by the strength of our fellow nominated films. ... But I think the most special thing about winning this award is that our film is 14 minutes long. It's a short. And we won in a general documentary category. At Breakwater Studios, we believe that the best filmmaking respects the audience's time, and that the story should dictate the film's length, not the platform. We don't make films to binge a weekend away. We make films to capture something true, and we think being succinct is a virtue, not a handicap. We don't parse paintings by dimension, songs by length, or a chef's work by its weight. If we let film run free (and thus create an economy for work of any length), watch as a whole world of filmmakers and their stories opens up. As Yoda would say "Size matters not."
