As part of our Día de los Muertos celebration on Sunday, October 24 we have recruited artist Denise Esparza to create the ofrenda! Denise, a Chicana altarista, was born in 1966 in East Los Angeles. She is the daughter of Ofelia & Amado Esparza, the youngest of their nine children. Denise represents six generations of altar makers of Purepecha roots, hailing from Guanajuato, Mexico. Her work as an altarista and handcrafter was heavily influenced by her mother, Ofelia Esparza, ...who is globally recognized for her Day of the Dead ofrendas (altars/shrines) and by her grandmother Lupe Aviles Salazar. More info on the event here: http://bostoncourtpasadena.org//dia-de-los-muertos-celebra Pictured is an ofrenda Denise made in 2019. #DayoftheDead #DiaDeLosMuertos #FreeEvent

SIX FEET AP[ART]: A COMMUNITY ART PROJECT 2020 was quite a year and we feel like we need space to process all that has happened and to imagine a brighter future for this new year. What better way to get out all the feels than by creating a community art project together? Boston Court invites the Pasadena community to paint your reflections of the past year and hopes for the future on our new outdoor art walls. The walls are gridded with squares that you can paint in how...ever you’d like and the patchwork murals that we create together will then be on display at Boston Court throughout the spring! The painting will take place outdoors in our driveway and parking lot, socially distanced and everyone will be required to wear masks. Boston Court staff will be on site to assist! Sign up to paint starting March 31st at bit.ly/apARTsignup. We asked three professional artists to paint a square to get us started. Think of their squares as the first person to answer a question in a quiet zoom room(god bless those heroes). They open the door to invite you into the painting party! Click through to get to know them and to see their beautiful contributions to Six Feet Ap[Art]! And a big shout out to Light Bringer Project, our partners are this project!
