Training Tip: Mobility- Single Leg Flexion with External Rotation Stretch This stretch is coming straight outta one of my favorite mobility books, Becoming a Supple Leopard by Dr. Kelly Starrett. It’s a great way to improve squatting mechanics and mobility, but with one leg at a time. The hip & knee flexion with external rotation is how I teach my athletes to generate force while squatting. I also use this stretch to relieve some hip stiffness, or tightness in the low bac...k. All we’re doing here is getting in position and searching for tightness. I encourage my athletes to hold a stretch for at least 2 minutes or even longer if they can tolerate it. The addition of the band helps you get a bit deeper into the stretch as it adds an external rotation force across the hip. When an athlete needs to build MASS we use a variation of factors to elicit the right adaptation. 1) High intensity & volumes with short rest periods or 2) The inclusion of slow eccentrics (lowering of weight) as shown in this video. It’s all about the amount of time muscles are under tension to increase muscle growth and both methods will work. In the push/pull flow shown here I'm hitting a bench press with a 40X tempo immediately followed by pull ups with a 40X tempo. The ...slow tempos are crucial as our muscles can produce more force eccentrically (lowering the weight) compared to concentrically (lifting the weight) increasing the intensity of the movement. Swipe & check out this oldie but goody exercise I program with many of my athletes here at the BPC. The Get-Up is a great compound movement that dynamically develops the trunk and spine, and is just as beneficial for the general population as it is for athletes. This is also another one of my Mike Boyle faves. When coaching, I break this movement down into 3 phases (excluding transition). Pic 1: Quarter Get-Up. ... Pic 2: Half Get-Up Pic 3: Transition Pic 4: Full Get-Up Coaching points here is to keep the torso stiff and hips engaged. It helps to keep the eyes on the kettlebell throughout the entire movement.
