Books In The Shop

Reading to your child has enormous benefits. Books appropriate for various age groups have been carefully selected by literacy experts and each mini library has been configured to work well within spaces set aside by proprietors.

Books are provided at no charge. We find there are many benefits to placing mini libraries at locations frequented by children. Idle time can now be put to productive use by reading quality, children’s literature and other ageappropriate books. Given some of the un-addressed, negative urban conditions in which so many of our children are being raised, small efforts can make a huge difference in encouraging success in school and in life. ... Many proprietors recognize the need for improved literacy and are willing to address it by providing space for Books in the Shop mini libraries. This concern seems a natural progression for establishments that have historically been gathering places for locals. Books in the Shop libraries create an inspired space in local businesses a reading environment and knowledge sharing space for motivating continuing and higher education. This consists of young people living up to high expectations placed by adults in the community. Children are more proficient in all subject matters if they are able to read well. Books in the Shop is one tool that can be used to empower young people in a community where only 1 in 6 students graduate from high school to a community consisting of young people with increased literacy skills.
