STAFF RECOMMENDED: THEY CALLED US ENEMY by George Takei. Ivy, Bookshop's children's book buyer, says, "George Takei has always been vocal about the wrongs he and his family suffered in the forced incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII. This beautifully rendered graphic novel with a classic Tezuka art style lays out the full story as it follows his family through two internment camps and to the present. It is hard not to draw comparisons between his experience and what is happening at the border. Lovingly told, this book is vital and I couldn't look away." Find this book and more titles that speak to the history and experience of Asian Americans and Asian immigrants in America on our website: https://www.bookshopsantacruz.com/AAPI

We don’t know about you but we’re surrounding ourselves with books that make us feel hopeful and full of wonder. This is one of our recent favorites: WORLD OF WONDERS by Aimee Nezhukumatathil. I do not know if I learned more about Nezhukumatathil or the intriguing plants and animals she so delightfully connects to her own life (the corpse flower! the axolotl!) but I am delighted to not care either way. Already renowned as a gifted Filipina-Indian poet, her ability to detail, celebrate, and use the natural world to bring nuance to social issues and the personal puts this lovely illustrated book in that beautiful blend of science, memoir, and truthfor me, that’s nature writing at its best. You voted? Good. While you wait, here’s some recommended reading material: ANXIOUS PEOPLE, by Fredrik Backman. As the world becomes more anxious and frayed than ever, one of our greatest remedies is to read a Fredrik Backman novel. Backman, through his humor, emotion, and honesty, reminds us that it is precisely the messiness of being human that makes us more connected to each other than we ever think possible. In Anxious People, Backman introduces us to a group of character...s who happen to be in the wrong place (hostage situation) at the wrong time (apartment viewing) but whose willingness to listen and connect to each other turn everything right. This novel is a balm for the soul. Casey, Owner Get your copy here: https://www.bookshopsantacruz.com/book/9781501160837 . . . #anxiouspeople #balmforthesoul #whatweneed #butfirstvote #bookstagram
