Talking Points: The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for San Diego County inland valleys and mountains, which will be in effect 9 p.m. Thursday through 9 a.m. Saturday. Moderate strength Santa Ana winds are expected in typically wind prone, isolated pockets of the backcountry. The strongest winds (30-40 mph gusts) are forecasted to arrive on Friday, and the weather would likely remain breezy through Saturday. In response to the Red Flag Warning and out of an abundance of caution, SDG&E has notified 2,700 customers that it may have to turn off power in order to reduce wildfire risk beginning early Friday morning. Communities that could be affected include Alpine, Campo Reservation, Crestwood, Descanso, Julian, La Posta Reservation, Manzanita Reservation, Pala, Santa Ysabel, Santa Ysabel Reservation, Valley Center and Viejas Reservation. Visit sdge.com/ready for a map of communities that could be affected and Community Resource Centers that may be available in affected communities to support customers. We understand the last thing customers want to hear right now is that they may lose power, given the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and the ongoing COVID pandemic. Several hundred of our field crews and other support personnel are going to work through the holiday weekend and do everything we can to minimize impact should weather conditions require us to turn off power to protect public safety. Decisions to implement Public Safety Power Shutoffs are not made lightly. Shutting off power is a last resort to reduce wildfire risk and protect public safety. As the provider of an essential service, we have an obligation to keep our customers informed and safe. Our meteorology team is closely monitoring the weather circuit by circuit, and it’s our hope that Mother Nature will cooperate and conditions will change, eliminating or reducing the need for safety power shutoffs. Customers who have received alerts from us should be prepared to make alternative arrangements for holiday celebrations and have emergency resources at hand to keep their family, pets and livestock safe. To avoid food spoilage, customers are also encouraged to make ice cubes or buy ice in advance. SDG&E will continue to provide customers with updates via phone, text message, email, social media, sdge.com, and the Alerts by SDG&E mobile app.
Thank you SDG&E for sponsoring this event.
