William Penn Collins was a lawyer and a traveling orator on behalf of the Colorado Socialist Party in the early 20th century, speaking on such topics as Christianity and Socialism, the position of women and children under Socialism, the need for peaceful revolution, and related themes. Collins, William Penn. The only issue now is Socialism. Socialism or Capitalism. Progression or retrogression, revolution or reaction and decomposition... Come and hear W. Penn Collins of Boul...der, Colorado [handbill]. Denver, CO: Socialist Party; W.P. Collins, [191-?]. 8.5x12 inch leaflet, very good. Collins ran for Attorney General in 1908 and Supreme Court Judge in 1910; this leaflet is in the style of those from his 1910 campaign. These were printed ahead of time and sent to the sites of future lectures, for the details of time and place to be added in the blank spaces at the bottom. (#273708) $75.00 Collins, born in Mukwonago, Wisconsin, moved to Boulder in 1898 after finishing law school. He practiced there until moving his office to Denver in the 1920s. See more

We recently handled some school yearbooks from the Japanese internment camps during WWII. The boy at the center in the last row is Pat Morita, later to become famous as the actor who played Mr. Miyagi in The Karate Kid, but at this time an unhappy seventh grader who had just been released from the hospital in San Francisco after surgery - only to be sent to a camp with his parents in the Arizona desert.

One hundred and fifty women who probably had never thought of themselves as a minority group suddenly learned the cold, hard facts of discrimination. They were laid off simply because they were women..." Describes the union's successful efforts to win their jobs back. A girl's best friend is her union. Not every damaged book is ruined - some types of damage reflect later political developments. In this pocket-sized volume of "Study Documents for Political Work" in Little Red Book format, which contains the articles On Correcting Mistaken Ideas in the Party and Resolution on Strengthening the PLA's Political and Ideological Work," there's a photo showing Chairman Mao with his designated successor Lin Biao. Lin's face has been scratched right through the paper, leaving a hole. This literal "defacement" was widely done to his portraits after his failed coup and death in a plane crash in 1971. Zheng zhi gong zuo xue xi wen jian . Beijing: Zhongguo ren min jie fang jun zong zheng zhi bu, 1970. 187p., Extensive underlining, title page removed, some staining and handling soil. (#261867) $20.00
