Your art can be broken into 3 increments 1. Forms + basics 2. Self Defense techniques 3. Sparring 9. Your fight style can be broken down into 3 methods 1. Defense 2. Counters 3. Entry techniques 10. In kicking techniques you have 4 major concerns 1. Protection 2. Balance 3. Weapon 4. Depth 11. Cover your distance with weapons and not targets 12. Don’t let what you can’t do interfere with what you can do 13. Interview the people you train with to get feedback on your progress 14. Using the above mention breakdowns do honest and continual inventories on your skills and your attitude. 15. Embrace the things you do well but actively work on your troubled areas 16. Keep a recorded notebook on your Karate journey 17. Educate yourself by reading books and asking questions 18. Embrace the 4 Laws of Learning 1. Explanation 2. Demonstration 3. Imitation 4. Repetition 19. If it’s not worth dying over it’s not worth fighting over 20. The most dangerous technique we can throw is one that is done half way. 21. The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement 22. Respect is earned. It can’t be demanded or purchased 23. Surround yourself with people that have a real passion for training 24. Remember there is a condition that has kept people in everlasting ignorance and that condition is, Contempt prior to investigation. 25. Barbara and I are hosting a young lady from Telluride, Colorado this week, Danika Petit. She recently tested for her Black Belt and is an excellent athlete as w...ell as a wonderful young lady. Between her test and now she has gone to school and earned her EMT certification. Since she arrived here she has been working on Form 7 and sparring with Jamie Matthews during her visit. I mentioned to her this morning if she can leave with the information on Charles Swindoll’s paper on Attitude and Theodore Roosevelt’s speech on The Man in the Arena it will have been a very successful visit. This week Barbara and I will be filming our Brown Belt card for our Patreon library. It is our desire to make this library the most comprehensive resource for o...ur students. We currently have curriculum material including techniques, forms, foot maneuvers, blocks, kicks, etc. We also have the origins of Kenpo Karate presented by Professor Eric Nepsky and Danika Petit, break falls and rolls presented by Professor Chad Gundlach, Focus Pad drills presented by Kenpo Karate Black Belt Tommy Wish as well as a flexibility class presented by Philip Sahagun. We have episodes on sparring including the 3 aspects of fighting, defense, counters, and entry techniques. The Elements of Effective Coaching, A Purpose Driven Journey to Success, and Ron Sanchez's Mindset for Urban Combat is also in the library. Andrea Pfefer Trombi demonstrates a first class Kick Set and show why she is a 6 time IKC Grand Champion. We are taking requests for material that our subscribers would like to learn more about so please submit these to me. The membership has continued to grow, and we want to be actively involved making our library grow as well. People have 24-hour access to the site and unlimited use. We plan on giving the opportunity to purchase annual memberships and we certainly want this to be an investment in our student’s education. Great post by David Arnold. Mr Arnold has been a consistent supporter of our events for Royal Family Kids at our tournament and as a seminar instructor. Promoting black belts does not impress me at all. Promoting high quality black belts is mildly impressive. What impresses me are schools and organizations that manage to have black belts return to training for years after they receive their black belt. Most people see black belt as their final destination, the next largest group simply fails to find a challenge or enough in post black belt work at their schools and leave or move on. The schools that keep their black belts training have developed a strong community that drives those advanced students as well as the new ones and that is impressive.

The normal class structure is 10-20-30 ten minute warm-up, twenty minutes of drill, and thirty minutes of self-defense techniques. This was the structure advoca...ted by Ed Parker. Tomorrow night’s Zoom classes will be different and this is my script. The 6-7 beginning class will do the entire Orange Belt card and the 7-8 class will do the entire Blue Belt card. Saturday morning we are having an outdoor Black Belt test and we anticipate a good sized crowd. Please do not allow this great day be negatively effected by not wearing your mask and put yourself and others at risk. If you come wear your mask.

Years ago I won a big tennis tournament and part of the win was a free membership to a country club. I became friends with the tennis manger who was also the head professional. The club had a strict dress code and one of the rules was that you had to wear a collared shirt. Some of the members were very successful business people and didn't feel that the rules applied to them. My friend was constantly in conflict with these people about wearing a collared shirt. Privately I would joke with him about after all of the years he had spent as a pro, it comes down to being a collared shirt policeman. I don't want that to happen to me. If you can't wear a mask don't come to the studio. I am not the mask police, I teach Kenpo Karate and your feelings of entitlement is not acceptable here. Bob White
