! ! Chúc Mng Nm Mi! You might have seen these floating around the last few Lunar New Years. We are now happy to ring in the Year of the Ox with our very own red envelopes (hongbao)! We made limited batch. Each envelope sports our Boba Guys gold foil Year of the Aardvark design (artwork by @zodilee).... We’ll talk about deeper cultural significance in a later post, but here is HongBao 101. You generally gift red envelopes to the younger generation and those unmarried to bring luck and happiness in the new year-- there’s a lot to unpack here about reverence for the elderly and filial piety, but one step at a time. Basically, don’t put iTunes gift cards in it. Note: 10 large envelopes are included in each pack, each measuring 3.5 by 6.5. Designed and sized to fit dollar bills. Available on bobaguys.com - tap to learn more.

Boba Guys x @kaonuxu.taiwan Pineapple Cake Box Just in time to celebrate the new year! We will also gift our limited-edition Boba Guys red envelopes to the first 50 orders. For those that don’t know, pineapple cakes are historically a symbol of hospitality and friendship. We met Alan, the founder of KaoNuXu many years ago randomly while we were in Taiwan sourcing teas and this collaborative box set represents our long-standing partnership. Our limited edition 12-piece b...ox set features four flavors: regular, charcoal, matcha, and mango. Each pineapple cake is made from fresh and local Taiwanese ingredients. Derived from ripe pineapples native to Taiwan, each cake is born from a process of hand-kneading, molding, and careful inspection for perfection. The final stamping of TW (Taiwan) on each pineapple cake by Mr. Kao is a symbol of high quality and its birthplace. Available on bobaguys.com. Tap to shop!

How are our grade-A @usbobaco boba balls made at our factory in Hayward, CA? 1 MIXING - Team members at our boba factory combine tapioca starch (made from cassava plant root) with ingredients to produce a caramel-colored powder 2 BEADING / TUMBLING- This powder is added to a machine that spins it around while keep it moist to form small beads. Then, another machine rolls the beads faster and with more water to grow them... 3 SORTING - When the boba pearls are big enough, they are added to a conveyor belt where they inspected for the right size. If they're too small, they return to the machine. Too big, and they are broken down into a powder to start the process again. 4 DISTRIBUTION - The vacuumed sealed packages are sent to our headquarters where we distribute them to our stores to be cooked for your drinks each and every day!! Read the complete process in our @nytimes features - link in bio!

And once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about. - Haruki Murakami : @thebobabook

As of this week, all of our coffee in California (SF & LA) has been transitioned to @proyectodiaz. We are so happy to continue growing with Fernando, Hannah-Love, and his team. There’s a lot of backstory that we will continue sharing over time, but please check out their takeover highlights on our profile to get to know them better. They are absolutely one of our fave businesses in the country and so happy to be a part of their growth.

Yet, even amidst the hatred and carnage, life is still worth living. It is possible for wonderful encounters and beautiful things to exist. Hayao Miyazaki : @thebobabook

Where do we go now? For the last two years, we’ve been teaching our team the idea of wabi sabi, a paradigm that reconciles the impermanence and imperfections of life while striving for excellence. The second slide is straight from our annual leadership presentation from last January. . In the world of wabi sabi is an art form called kintsugi. We’ve talked about it in our @teapeopleus side of the business but felt it was time to bring it over to our Boba Guys audience. .... Kintsugi is an ancient Japanese style of pottery where you bind broken pieces back together with lacquer accents like gold or silver. The idea is to emphasize the fractures and memorialize it, letting it become a part of the pottery’s history. We are often ashamed of our scars and try to disguise them kintsugi acknowledges these imperfections instead. . There isn’t much to be said that hasn’t already been said in our little echo chamber. You follow us because you probably jive with our worldview. It should be evident by now that our job isn’t to conform, but to bring various worlds together. We are all gold accents in a once-broken pottery piece. We, like our system, is imperfect. We will break and heal over and over again. But there is beauty in that, if we can see the big picture. . We lead hundreds of team members and serve millions of people every year. Knowing that, we think the best message we can give right now is that we will be pieced back together again. We are shattered, so it’ll take some time. We just can’t disguise our imperfections or forget about them. We have hearts of gold (lacquer), so let’s use them to heal. See more

You must see with eyes unclouded by hate. See the good in that which is evil, and the evil in that which is good. Pledge yourself to neither side, but vow instead to preserve the balance that exists between the two. - Hayao Miyazaki : @thebobabook

Chi Ku means to eat bitter in Mandarin. We explored this concept in past posts and @thebobabook before but we feel that it’s fitting for the times. . Growing up, our moms would tell us to eat bitter things like bittermelon or certain herbs because one day, it will pay off with better health (as many bitter foods are good for you). The idea is do the hard work now so it’ll pay off later. Chi Ku or the lack thereof shows up everyday, from the way we eat how we treat our relationships. To give into instant gratification is human nature and we will occasionally fail, but to fully sustain great health, we must do the real, hard work now. The job isn’t done.

Lots of thoughts to end the year with, but we want to repeat something we told our team this week... please take care of each other. Our community exists to bridge cultures it has and will always be focused on Individualism vs. Collectivism (Eastern philosophy vs. Western philosophy). It is the premise of @thebobabook and first introduced in our column with GOOD Magazine nearly a decade ago. . The cultural divide is how we ended up where we are today. It is obvious that we a...re divided more than ever, but there is hope. We see the future in our team. We see the way they look after each other. We see their concern for the public and dedication despite being in a constant start of flux (the second pic is during our last team event). But they remain mindful. They are resilient. They get the big picture. . As entrepreneurs and business leaders, we often work with the concept of good faith. It’s the basis of contract law and deal terms. You go into a relationship assuming the other party wants things to work out, too. So you can’t write out every literal clause, quid pro quo, and term in a relationship. At a certain point, you shake hands in a spirit of good faith. Even if the other party has a spotty track record. Even if they are error prone. If the goal is to coexist or work together, you have to assume good faith to a certain extent. . In Chinese culture, we call it guanxi (). Guanxi is about building trust and rapport with someone first before you enter in a relationship or partnership. Without it, contracts break and promises become fragile. You never build momentum. You need good faith, guanxi, or whatever you want to call it to get better... as people and as a society. . We got no big promises for 2021. Thanks for helping us get through this year. We will see you all on the other side. Onwards. See more
