In these challenging times, we have to be the change you want to see in the world. If we want social equality & justice, you must speak up when you see inequality or injustice. If we want to end discrimination & racism, we have to speak up against it & support our brothers & sisters.... We must condone white privilege & promote love over hatred & fear. The time for change is now so we must act now.

We are McStuffin Mommies. We are a collective of nearly 1,200 women physicians of color. We are nearly 1,200 women physicians of color who are, alsomothers. Daily, we leave our homes and tend to minds, bodies and souls to heal them and make them better, regardless of color. With a smile, we perform physicals on towheaded boys who look like Dylann Roof, then come home and wince in fear when our sweet little boys smile with that small gap in the front like Ahmaud Arbery.... Cheerfully, we set the broken bones of men with a sprinkling of gray hair like Derek Chauvin then anxiously hold our breaths when our husbands stand tall in dapper black suits and leave our homes like George Floyd. We hold the hands and deliver the babies of precious young women like Amy Cooper then admonish our sons to NEVER leave the house alone and always have a witness when speaking to strange women who do not look like us, their sisters or their grandmothers. Anxiously, we teach our curly haired boys that if those women raise an alarm to keep their hands UP, eyes DOWN and voices LOW when speaking to those they may summon. With determined efficiency we restart the hearts of obese red-haired men like Travis McMichael then feel our stomach twist in knots when our daughters complete their applications for EMT training like Breonna Taylor. We remain committed to our oath to provide the best medical care possible to every patient that crosses our paths regardless of their station in life, their religious affiliationtheir color. We do this while we look at our beautiful brown children with the crushing reality that this world will NEVER afford them that same level of equanimity and grace. For 8 minutes and 46 seconds we saw, but most of all we heard. We heard 114 words. TWO that pierced our souls. Two cries for Mama. We heard our boys. We heard our girls. We heard, in that moment, that no matter how many lives we may save, there are so many others willing to take the lives we made. Make a promise to us America. We made a promise to care for your children. Make a promise to us to do better by our children. Allow us to breathe.

It has been a busy week for me due to patient care responsibilities but I wanted to respond to the George Floyd's murder by Minneapolis police officers on Monday. I have had a lot of sleepless nights since I learned of the murder of Mr Floyd. The arresting officer used unnecessary force to retain Mr Floyd by kneeling on his neck. It is obvious that Mr Floyd could not breathe & he died of asphyxia. This unnecessary force to restrain an black man who did not resist arrest or... oppose a threat shows the corruption of the police system & the reason why many black people fear & distrust the police system. There is racial injustice in how police officers approach people of color & there has been many witnesses accounts of police brutality & sensless murders at the hands of police including Sandra Bland. In Minneapolis & Atlanta there have been protesta in response to this injustice. All Americans are entitled to inalienable rights in the Constitution: freedom, pursuit of happiness. We as Black Americans & Americans of color from different ethnic groups are asking for justice for these hate crimes & for equality. We want to be treated fairly like our white counterparts. We will no longer keep quiet or tolerant such injustice & allow innocent lives to be taken & families devastated by such tragic logic at the hands of those who are supposed to serve & protect. I feel that although the civil rights movement was decades ago, we have not made any strides in racial injustice. And we should not to have to live in fear on our own country. We should be allowed to live peacefully. Those who keep quiet about such injustice are just as guilty as those who commit the crimes. We can not condone such behavior any longer. Let us honor the memory of all those men & women who were lost at the hands of racist & corrupt police officers & legal system by having a proper internal transparent investigation & criminal charges as well as training of our police officers about brutality & racial injustice to prevent any more deaths. As a physician, mother, & world citizen, I can not BE silent about this social injustice. #GeorgeFloyd #socialjustice #racism
