It's Flamingo Friday! The Mint Julep is best known for being the traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby. Even us West Coasters know that. But did you know the Mint Julep recipe originates from the late 1700s? It has Arab roots from a drink called julab it was made with water and rose petals. When this cocktail first made its way on the scene in 1850 it was limited in popularity. This was due to a key recipe component: ice. This cocktail must-have was difficult to come by ...and over time was enjoyed only by the elite. In 1983, the MJ became the official drink of the Kentucky Derby thus solidifying its place in American culture. This is when the MJ hit what we call in marketing the tipping point skyrocketing in popularity and finding itself the it cocktail of the annual occasion. Ingredients: 8 mint leaves 1/4 ounce simple syrup 2 ounces bourbon Garnish: Angostura bitters (optional) Garnish: mint sprig Steps: In rocks glass (pictured above), lightly muddle the mint leaves and simple syrup. Add the bourbon and pack glass tightly with crushed ice. Stir until the cup is frosted on the outside. Top with more crushed ice and garnish with a mint sprig and a few drops of bitters (optional). Tom Collins Rumor has it, this cocktail originated from the Tom Collins Hoax of 1874. Supposedly this hoax consisted of one person telling another that someone with that name was speaking ill of him or her at a nearby bar, sending that person off to find such an individual and seek revenge. When revenge on the other side was really a delicious beverage. In modern day, we’d call that a bait and switch. A major no-no in marketing and in fact does the opposite of creating trust... with your customer or community. We’re up for a Tom Collins -- but only when it comes to a beverage. Ingredients: 1 1/2 ounces gin 1 ounce lemon juice 1/2 ounce simple syrup 3 ounces club soda (or enough to fill) Garnish: maraschino cherry Sip. Sip. Repeat. One of our cornerstones is giving back to our community so when our client ChicoBag invited us to join them at Butte Environmental Council’s creek cleanup this morning we said Heck yeah! Buckets, masks and pickers in hand a hefty team of volunteers cleaned up along the Comanche Creek greenway. It was a lovely morning to boot! #beccleanup2020
Negroni For those of you that prefer non-sweet cocktails, the Negroni is a classic that can't be beat. Refreshingly bitter, this cocktail has been around for over a hundred years and we can see why. It's easy to make (1-1 ratio for all ingredients) and is the perfect drink to follow a delicious Friday night dinner. As with all our cocktail recipes, we suggest you invest in the best base ingredients you can. Like any recipe, quality ingredients take it from good to BAM! Negro...ni Ingredients: 1 oz gin 1 oz Campari 1 oz sweet vermouth Garnish: orange peel Add all ingredients to either a shaker or mixing glass with ice. Shake or stir until well chilled Strain into a glass filled with large ice cubes Sip. Sip. Repeat. recipe courtesy of liquor.com
