The 2017 Awake-A-Thon hosted by the BLIA Sacramento Young Adult Division was an educational event that took place from December 22-23 at the Fo Guang Shan Bodhi Temple in Sacramento. Participants stayed awake for twelve hours doing various activities throughout the night and early morning. This event was one of many fundraisers to help support our young adults to attend a Buddhist retreat at the main temple in Taiwan. At the beginning of the Awake-A-Thon our venerable taught ...us the three good deeds in relation to Humanistic Buddhism: do good deeds, think good thoughts, and speak good words. We practiced the three good deeds throughout the night as we fellowshipped with each other and created origami figures to donate to the Sacramento Asian Community Center Nursing Home and Shriner’s Hospital. We also practiced how to meditate as instructed by our venerable. We practiced many forms of meditation such as tea, sitting, walking, and exercising meditation, and we learned about the various benefits of meditation, including promoting mental clarity, a focused mind, calmness, mindfulness, and an increase in energy levels. Overall, this event has given us guidance to benefit our lives in a healthy and positive way. This is one of the many more Awake-A-Thons to come. Do good deeds. Think good thoughts. Speak good words.
