Patricia Burgess Blackman (Jan 5, 1938 May 7, 2020) started her final round joining her husband Bruce on the big course where everyone has a starting time and... there's no slow play. She passed peacefully with her family nearby after a three-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. Trish was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to Dr. & Mrs. Clarence M. Burgess. She survived the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the war years graduating from Punahou in the class of ’55. She was a competitive swimmer through her high school years and excelled in math and science classes. At the University of Wisconsin, she pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma, practiced yoga and graduated as a teacher. Later, she followed sister Mary Ann and best friend Maria to San Francisco and received a Master's degree in education from Cal just as things got interesting in the early 1960’s. Following the 1963 Transpac race, at a crew party thrown by her mother, she was introduced to her lifelong love, Bruce Blackman. They married in Honolulu after a wild, two year affair. Lehman 12 sailing and late nights in the Pirate’s Den at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club led to two sons, David and Robert, joining Bruce’s children Susan and Stephen. Anchored in Newport Beach, teaching at Newport Elementary School, she joined Bruce in his jewelry business becoming a driving force with her quick mind for accounting and excellent buyer’s taste. She was also a trusted member and treasurer of the Junior League, the Assistants League and Little Garden Club making lifelong friends along the way. Initially, traveling to Europe to buy jewelry and giftware for the business, Trish developed a huge passion for travel. She loved fine old hotels and flying first class which translated into a second career as a much sought-after travel agent. Her favorite was the Amandari in Bali and she often returned to the Oriental in Bangkok and Peninsula in Hong Kong. This naturally led to more than a passing interest in South East Asian history and culture culminating in a multi-year pursuit of a Phd. at UCLA in comparative religion and education. In the late 1980’s she and Bruce joined the Santa Ana Country Club and together found another of life’s passionsgolf. Now her focus shifted to competition as a respected member of the SACC Women’s golf team and planning trips to exotic golfing destinations. She treasured the friendships and fun she had with all her golfing buddies. Lately, she had taken up bridge and was really enjoying getting to know a whole new group of friends. Always quick to point out when any of us could do a bit better, her unfiltered wit was graciously countered by a fair and generous spirit that will always be remembered. She is survived by her sons David and Robert and stepson Stephen, daughter-in-laws Lorie and Lisa, grandchildren Cori, Ryan, Grace, Jack and Hayes, and sister Mary-Ann McCrea of Honolulu.
