Birth work, with all its output for others, needs to be balanced with self care. Self care is something I am NOT good at so I "pretend" I am other people in order to do it. This morning, I am @jo_kilburn1 sipping my chai tea after meditation and feeling into the winter. Leanna and Joey took the leap from hospital to home birth during Pandemic time. For Leanna, not having her mom at her birth was a deciding factor. Investing time into education and planning for ALL types of birth - home, possible hospital transfer from home, AND a possible cesarean, allowed both partners to get on the same page, to create a beautiful, connected birth, no matter where their daughter decided to be born. This baby chose home! Homework and time were key factors in creating what they describe as the birth experience of their dreams. OFF TRAIL When you go into labor, true active labor, your primal birthing brain takes over. Your endocrine system releases hormones that work in concert to star...t contractions, create an open path for baby to exit, and relieve the pain. We don’t think. We just feel. And move. And groan. And roar. But as a society, we have been taught to fear birth. To shut down this process if ANYTHING doesn’t fit with the medical version of what’s normal. So we hand our power over to the Medical Industrial Complex, because how dare we trust ourselves and our ability. But often we desperately want that empowered, POWERFUL, welcome-our-baby-into-the-world-OUR-WAY, birth. But we are scared. We’ve been taught to fear this physiological process. So often, our conditioning overrides our instincts. So often, the unfamiliar feels wrong, no matter how right it might be.~ Shreve Stockton- Meditations With Cows @dailycoyote We are programmed to have more faith in the unnatural, artificial world of medicalized birth, than we are our own innate ability to give life. And we push our instincts aside. Stomp them down. Refusing to believe in ourselves, while our doctors rattle off things like risk to the baby, and worse. This is why education, training, and preparation during pregnancy is so vital. So that you know that you have options for almost an turn your birthing may take. And what those options are. Don’t be afraid to go off trail and break from the medical status quo when you know what’s possible AND safe for you. Do it YOUR way. Trust your instincts - they were put there for a reason.
