Adam Castillejo, a 40-year-old man from London, is believed to have become the second person in the world to be cured of HIV with a stem-cell treatment he underwent for a cancer. Tests carried out on Mr Castillejo suggest 99 per cent of his immune cells have been replaced by donor ones. This represents HIV cure with almost certainty," Professor Ravindra, of the University of Cambridge said. Our findings show that the success of stem-cell transplantation as a cure for HIV, f...irst reported nine years ago in the Berlin patient, can be replicated. Prof Gupta said the treatment is only used as a last resort for patients with HIV who also have life-threatening haematological malignancies. Therefore, this is not a treatment that would be offered widely to patients with HIV who are on successful anti-retroviral treatment, he said. Castillejo remains free of the virus 30 months after he stopped anti-retroviral therapy, doctors said. BioSoft Integrators knows the requisites of clients pursuing new breakthroughs in science. Scientists from Université de Genève (UNIGE) and Université de Lausanne (UNIL), the Ludwig Cancer Research (LICR), EPFL and CHUV / Centre hospitalier universitaire vaudois, in collaboration with Swiss Cancer Centre Léman (SCCL, Switzerland) discovered that the CD4 T lymphocytes are capable of killing tumor cells. Scientists studied CD4 T lymphocytes from around twenty patients with melanoma who were being treated at CHUV. Pedro Romero said, We focused on CD4 T lymphocytes, w...hich offer invaluable support to our immune system." They created chips of over 20,000 mini-wells of 65 picolitres that can accommodate a CD4 T cell and a tumor cell in each of them. Professor Romero stresses, The high-throughput integration of dynamic imaging data showed that up to a third of the CD4 T lymphocytes succeeded in killing the tumor cell, ...confirming the existence of CD4 T lymphocytes capable of killing tumor cells. Dr. Jandus said, That’s why we’re now going to isolate and cultivate in vitro the best killer variety of CD4 T lymphocytes so we can turn them into a veritable army of trillions of cells, which we can then inject into patients on whom CD8-based treatments don’t work." A powerful type of artificial intelligence known as "deep learning" can help physicians detect potentially life-threatening cerebral aneurysms on CT angiography, according to a study published in the journal Radiology (RSNA Journal). Cerebral aneurysms are weakened areas of blood vessels in the brain. Left untreated, they can leak or rupture, with sometimes fatal results. In a new study, Dr. Long and colleagues developed a fully automated, highly sensitive algorithm for the d...etection of cerebral aneurysms on CT angiography images. They used CT angiograms from more than 500 patients to train the deep learning system, and then they tested it on another 534 CT angiograms that included 649 aneurysms. The algorithm detected 633 of the 649 cerebral aneurysms with a sensitivity of 97.5%. It also found eight new aneurysms that were overlooked on the initial assessment. Statistical analysis revealed that deep learning assistance enhanced radiologists' performance. "We found some aneurysms that were overlooked by the human readers on the initial reports, but they were successfully depicted by the deep-learning system," Dr. Long said. A new study from the University of Birmingham has found that 50% of patients with a rare type of cancer known as Colorectal Peritoneal Metastasis (CPM) may be suitable for immunotherapy treatment. In 1% of bowel cancer patients, the cancer spreads to the lining of their abdomen and this is referred to as CPM. These patients have a limited survival rate, with the best available treatments; most not surviving beyond 12 months after diagnosis. Researchers have found that approxi...mately 50% of patients with CPM have a type of genetic change, called hypermutation. This means they may be sensitive to immunotherapy. "This is the first study of its kind in the world for patients with CPM, and our results have shown this could provide a potentially curative option for patients," said professor Andrew Beggs from the University of Birmingham's Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences. Researchers will now look to set up an international clinical trial to examine the use of immunotherapy for patients with CPM. Our purpose built LabOptimize LIMS ensures samples are tracked with flexibility, scalability and affordability. http://bit.ly/2LVW8zR #WeAreBioSoft #LIMS #datascience #lifescience #genomics #NGS #CancerAwarenessMonth #cancer #cancerawareness #CPM #immunotherapy

Today is #NationalCandyDay! Candies have been a consistent source of happiness and, as we get older, nostalgia. These sweet and sour treats are principally made from sugar, and unfortunately, sugar is one of the main causes of diabetes, but there are healthier and natural alternatives to prevent it, and that's where SynBio is stepping in. Carbometrics, Conagen, Amyris, Inc., Codexis, Inc., Tate and Lyle Sugars, ArcitekBio Limited, and STEM! are synthetic biology companies a...nd biohackers that are working hard to ensure a better prognosis for the prevention of diabetes or to monitor and control your blood sugar levels in the coming years, with an increased acceptance of the deliciously sweet, zero-calorie alternatives, which are already gaining market acceptance. Here’s a look into the next generation of continuous glucose monitoring systems and low-calorie sugar alternatives set to change the outlook for health in the U.S. and worldwide. https://bit.ly/3jRnFja It will be interesting to see whether the predictions made about Americans and diabetes in the next ten years will come true, and whether the rate may decrease with healthier, sugar-free candy options. November is #NationalDiabetesMonth, bringing awareness about the risk factors, symptoms, treatments, discoveries and types of diabetes. In order to improve diabetes therapy, researchers at the Université de Genève (UNIGE), Switzerland, have identified a protein called S100A9 which, under certain conditions, seems to act as a blood sugar and lipid regulator while avoiding the most harmful side effects of insulin. The researchers administered high doses of S100A9 to their insu...lin-deficient diabetic mice and found improved glucose management and better control of ketones and of lipids, two metabolic abnormalities that are common in people with insulin deficiency. The team conducted a clinical observation study, in collaboration with the Geneva University Hospitals, in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes presenting very high glucose and ketones levels. They are working to progress to phase I human clinical trials to directly test the safety and efficacy of S100A9 in insulin deficiency. The new therapeutic strategy proposed by Roberto Coppari, a professor at the Diabetes Centre of the UNIGE Faculty of Medicine and his team, could significantly improve the quality of life for tens of millions of people affected by insulin deficiency. According to a new study by researchers in UT Southwestern Medical Center's Kidney Cancer Program (KCP), an autoimmune side effect of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) drugs, could signal improved control of kidney cancer. Using Kidney Cancer Explorer, a proprietary tool that extracts information from electronic health records, thousands of laboratory test results were analyzed to identify patients whose kidney function became impaired, and identified that four patients devel...oped acute interstitial nephritis (AIN), an autoimmune condition in which immune cells attack kidney cells. "If a patient develops AIN, it is a sign that the treatment may be working," says Roy Elias, M.D., assistant instructor of internal medicine and co-first author of the study. Our LIMS offers a comprehensive solution to address tracking, process security, analysis and reporting of data with flexibility, scalability and thorough and complete documentation for research, clinical and production labs around the globe. http://bit.ly/2LVW8zR #WeAreBioSoft #LIMS #Datascience #lifescience #genomics #NGS #immunotherapy #cancertreatment

An innovative nanoparticle vaccine candidate for the pandemic coronavirus, designed by scientists at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. produces virus-neutralizing antibodies in mice at levels 10 times greater than is seen in people who have recovered from COVID-19 infections. The vaccine candidate is a self-assembling protein nanoparticle that displays 60 copies of the SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein’s receptor-binding domain in a highly immunogenic array. ...The molecular structure of the vaccine roughly mimics that of a virus, which may account for its enhanced ability to provoke an immune response. The data also shows a strong B-cell response after immunization, which can be critical for immune memory and a durable vaccine effect. Researchers say this may ensure protection against mutated strains of the virus, should they arise. The Spike protein is part of the coronavirus infectivity machinery. An ultrapotent vaccine that is safe, effective at low doses, simple to produce and stable outside of a freezer could enable vaccination against COVID-19 on a global scale. Until vaccines are globally available for all citizens, testing is a necessity, and we know the processes, the instruments and the unique reporting needs for COVID testing laboratories. https://bit.ly/32cSbPf #WeAreBioSoft #LIMS #datascience #lifescience #genomics #COVID19 #vaccine

A research team from the University of Cambridge and the University of Leeds, have developed bullet-like nanoparticles that can heat and destroy cancer cells from the inside. With the help of laser light, and an adaptation of this technology, this discovery may be useful in treating mesothelioma, a hard-to-treat cancer caused by asbestos exposure. The team’s gold nanotubes were added to mesothelioma cells cultured in the lab. The cells absorbed the nanotubes in a way that bro...ught them close to their nucleus and therefore the cell's DNA. The team then applied a laser which saw the nanotubes absorb the light and start to heat up, eventually killing off the cancer cells. The next stage will be to load these nanotubes with medicines for enhanced therapies, Professor Stephen Evans from the University of Leeds. When tracking experiments is critical, consider LabOptimize LIMS because its developed to be flexible, reliable, and scalable and designed to monitor multiple projects in parallel. https://bit.ly/32cSbPf #WeAreBioSoft #LIMS #DataScience #lifescience #genomics #drugdiscovery
