Stephen Hales was born this day in 1677. He was an English botanist, chemist and physiologist who pioneered the quantitative experimental approach in plant and animal physiology. Hales was the first to quantitatively measure blood pressure, measured the capacity of the left ventricle of the heart, and the output of the heart per minute. He invented an artificial ventilator that could convey fresh air into prisons, ships' holds, and granaries. This Molecule Monday we look at t...he molecule Argon. Argon is an inert, colorless and odorless element one of the Noble gases. Argon is the third-most abundant gas in the Earth's atmosphere, at 0.934% and is more than twice as abundant as water vapor. Used in fluorescent lights and in welding, this element gets its name from the Greek word for "lazy," an homage to how little it reacts to form compounds. #Biolytic #MoleculeMonday #Argon #greek #physiology #botanist #chemist #chemistry #didyouknow #bloodpressure #Hales #ventilator #element #earth #atmosphere See more

British geneticist Sir Alec Jeffreys discovered DNA fingerprinting on this day in 1984. He identified that every individual has a unique genetic code, so people could be identified by their genetic fingerprints. The technique has since helped to solve crime investigations and allowed the identification of family members in paternity cases. This Molecule Monday we look at CHNOPS. Although more than 25 types of elements can be found in biomolecules, six elements are most common. These are called the CHNOPS elements; the letters stand for the chemical abbreviations of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur. #biolytic #moleculemonday #chnops #jefferys #dna #genetic #fingerprint #id #paternity #elements #biomolecules #chemistry #science #didyouknow #onthisday #carbon #hydrogen #nitrogen #oxygen #phosphorus #sulfur

American biochemist Stanford Moore was born on this day in 1913. He shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Christian Anfinsen and William H. Stein in 1972 for their work on the structure of ribonuclease enzymes. These enzymes catalyse the degradation of ribonucleic acids (RNA) and are involved in the destruction of RNA viruses. This Term Tuesday we look at the term RNA. RNA, which stands for ribonucleic acid, is a polymeric molecule made up of one or more nucleotides. A str...and of RNA can be thought of as a chain with a nucleotide at each chain link. Each nucleotide is made up of a base (adenine, cytosine, guanine, and uracil, typically abbreviated as A, C, G and U), a ribose sugar, and a phosphate. RNA plays a central role in the pathway from DNA to proteins, known as the "Central Dogma" of molecular biology. #Biolytic #TermTuesday #DidYouKnow #RNA #Moore #HappyBirthday #Science #Chemistry See more

Pharmacists John Lea and William Perrins began manufacturing Worcester sauce on this day in 1837. Lea and Perrins sauce is still manufactured at the Midlands Road factory in Worcester, where production first began. In 1916 Perrins used some of the profits to found the Dyson Perrins organic chemistry laboratory at Oxford University. This Term Tuesday we look at the term Organic. Organic food is food produced by methods that comply with the standards of organic farming. Standar...ds vary worldwide, but organic farming in general features practices that strive to cycle resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity. Organizations regulating organic products may restrict the use of certain pesticides and fertilizers in farming. In general, organic foods are also usually not processed using irradiation, industrial solvents or synthetic food additives. #Biolytic #TermTuesday #Worcester #Organic #Chemistry #Science #Food #FDA #Ecological #Balance #Yummy See more

German chemist Carl Bosch was born on this day in 1874. His work transformed agriculture and industry. He co-developed the Haber-Bosch process, a method of fixing nitrogen using high pressure chemistry. Today this consumes more than 1% of the energy on Earth and is responsible for feeding around 30% of its population. This Molecule Monday we look at the molecule Nitrogen. Nitrogen is a naturally occurring element that is essential for growth and reproduction in both plants and animals. It is found in amino acids that make up proteins, in nucleic acids, that comprise the hereditary material and life’s blueprint for all cells, and in many other organic and inorganic compounds. In addition, nitrogen comprises about 80% of the Earth's atmosphere. #Biolytic #MoleculeMonday #Nitrogen #Element #Bosch #HaberBosch #Earth #Chemistry #Science

This Term Tuesday we look at the term Genomics. Genomics is the mapping and sequencing of genetic material in the DNA of a particular organism as well as the use of that information to better understand what genes do, how they are controlled, how they work together, and what their physical locations are on the chromosome. #Biolytic #TermTuesday #Genomics #Mapping #Biotech #Science #Chemistry #DidYouKnow
