A 4.6 magnitude earthquake centered in the area of the San Gabriel Valley city of Rosemead was strongly felt in La Mirada just prior to midnight. Biola Campus Safety personnel just finished checking all dormitories and other structures with everyone and everything checking out good. In the event of an earthquake, remember to DROP-COVER-HOLD-ON. To review a full list of preparedness responses, visit Campus Safety's web resource here.

President Corey shares an update regarding Biola’s plans for the Fall 2020 semester. Biola students and families have also received an email with this informati...on. For more information, please visit our Coronavirus response website here: https://www.biola.edu/coronavirus The following five decisions have been made: 1. We will begin the fall semester August 31 remotely in all of our undergraduate and graduate programs with the high level of academic excellence and student support services distinctive of Biola University. 2. If at some point we are granted permission by state and county authorities to reopen in the fall semester for on-campus learning and living consistent with Biola’s high level of educational and safety standards we will assess when and how to welcome students to return to campus. 3. In the event we open Biola for on-campus learning and living in the fall semester, students will still have the option to continue the semester in a remote learning mode. 4. Toward their fall semester tuition, nearly all full-time traditional undergraduate students will receive a $2,000 COVID-19 Tuition Relief Grant, and post-traditional undergraduate students, graduate students and part-time students will also receive a financial grant in varying amounts. 5. Current government guidelines allow for limited exemptions based on students who are being educated to support the essential healthcare infrastructure. We are confident our clinical nursing and psychology doctoral students qualify for this exemption. We are still waiting for further guidance as to whether students with extenuating circumstances who are not already living on campus will also be part of the exemption.

Chief John Ojeisekhoba was sworn as the newest Commissioner for the City of La Mirada Public Safety Commission on June 23rd (Don't worry, he is not leaving Biola). Chief is looking forward to working alongside 4 other commissioners to provide oversight, make recommendations pertaining to safety and security in the city, traffic safety, hold public hearings, and conduct ongoing review of services provided by the Sheriff's Department, Fire Department, and the Health Services.
