Just a reminder that tomorrow we have our usual Covid discussion open, but this week the time has changed to 10am. https://www.meetup.com/BioCurious/events/vcpgtrybcjbbc/ Join us at noon for our first ever round table discussion all in Spanish to discuss Open Insulin. https://www.meetup.com/BioCurious/events/271199164/

For the first time, Open Insulin/BioCurious will host a virtual panel in Spanish!

Starting in 45 mins. We strongly feel that the ideas of equity and equality are fundamentally important. As part of that commitment and also because of the huge response to the last time we ran it, we will be having Part 2 of our Round Table: "Confronting the Health Inequities of Insulin Access (or In-access)" - https://www.meetup.com/BioCurious/events/271110034/

People ask what sorts of work can be done in a community lab space like BioCurious. We are very excited to share a pre-print from our member, Chris Hackley (CRISP-HR Therapeutics) A Novel Set of Cas9 Fusion Proteins to stimulate Homologous Recombination: Cas9-HRs. This is a novel Cas9 fusion protein designed to increase HDR rates through bypassing the rate limiting step of homologous recombination repair. We asked Chris a bit about working on his cutting edge research at Bi...Continue reading

In the age of COVID, we have seen how fragile our health systems are, who bears the heaviest burden of the crisis, and how people are coming together to help each other through mutual aid. We will be discussing parallel topics that are all too relevant for those whose lives are dependent on insulin and what the Open Insulin Project is up against to help facilitate its access. Our panelists will be bringing unique perspectives from public health and community biology. The pane...l and discussion will be recorded and posted on youtube. Join this dynamic conversation with Maria Chavez, President at BioCurious, Anthony Di-franco, cofounder of the Open Insulin Project, Ramy Kim, public health practitioner & President of Counter Culture Labs, and Jose Liquet, microbiologist. After a short introduction, the panelists will ask each other questions about health inequalities and how this relate to the Open Insulin Project. After 30 min discussion, we will take questions from the public. You can ask your question directly on the chat or before on social media. Register now to get link. https://www.meetup.com/BioCurious/events/270802282/

Hard-core evolutionary genomics research, cheesy PR stunt, or recreational crypto-phylo-mythozoology - pick your own adventure! The Real Vegan Cheese project at Counter Culture Labs and BioCurious has half-jokingly claimed we can make cheese from any mammal with a sequenced genome - even something as weird as Narwhal. Well, the Narwhal genome just got published. Time to get serious! In this one-of-a-kind workshop, Patrik will dig into the casein genes that produce the cheese ...proteins in milk, look at the casein gene cluster in the genome, examine the evolution of narwhals and other whales from other mammals (did you know the closest land mammal to whales is the hippo?), and more. If you want to contribute to some serious science - there are at least one or two publishable scientific papers that we can work on, about the evolution of the casein gene cluster in whales. Or if you want to jump on board with our Real Vegan Cheese project, we can go over how to take the Narwhal casein genes and express them in yeast or E. coli for recombinant protein production. And if you really want to know what unicorn cheese would taste like - we can get into Ancestral Sequence Reconstruction from narwhal, horses, and... rhinos? Join us Saturday at 4pm PST on zoom. Signup on Meetup to attend. https://www.meetup.com/BioCurious/events/270323074/

BioCurious and Counter Culture Labs are hosting weekly Saturday zoom meetups to discuss all things COVID-19. We wanted to share some highlights of what we discussed this past Saturday with our broader community: Transmission- Aerosolized droplets coughing, labored breath (running, exercising, yelling, singing, etc), even possibly talking and normal breathing show evidence of possible exposure risks. Small droplets may linger in air of a confined space for a number of hours w...Continue reading
