Out awake and about This grizzly ventured out of its den after hibernation. The snow was still covering the valleys in the higher reaches of Yellowstone. But the pangs of hunger outdid the cold and he was out sniffing around for anything he could lay his teeth on. Though these are generalist omnivores, the diet of the ones in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem constitute almost 67% plants. During the mid-March to May, however, when coming out of hibernation, they feed primarily on the winter-killed carrion of elk, bison, and other ungulates. This guy was out trying to smell the air for the carrion buried in the snow or frozen in the Blacktail ponds. March, 2020

A bit too late... Had seen some courtship "Rushing" of the Clark's Grebe images recently on California FB birding groups and a good, kind friend shared the location. Headed down to the site over this long weekend. The western lakes and coastline is a favored habitat for two of the most elegant grebes in N. America. Their behaviors are also very interesting. During their courtship, both the male and female have developed a ritual to prove that they can each "walk on water" or... rather "run on water" to qualify for the breeding rights. Though I was too late to get to this courtship ritual, found several nests with eggs in them at a very unusual time of the year. Usually closer to home, in northern California, they mate and rear their chicks in late Spring. But have never seen them this late, up closer to home. This particular one is a Clark’s Grebe (white feather all around the eye). See more

The Lone Ranger Like every winter, I made it up there before the COVID restricted our mobility. It was not funny when the wife called and demanded that I get home the day after I had left because California was going under "lockdown". Had no idea what that meant being in the wonderland. Neither did I really want to investigate what it meant. The wife and son was at home and they were safe, the house was secured that was all ran through my mind at that point in time. Looking out of the car I saw this Lone Ranger in the -25F snow covered meadow. Did he have any worries about the virus that was just beginning to cast its devastation around the world? At least his eyes did not seem to reflect that.

Anna's hummingbird Growing a fascination for this species. Slowly seem to understand their behavioral traits and managing to get some meaningful frames. The auto focus on the Fuji is also helping a lot. Yet to try them on the Canon mirrorless, but will soon when i can get around a bit more. San Francisco Bay Area, Feb 2020
