CALIFORNIA HAS SOME NEW TRAFFIC LAWS FOR 2018: MARIJUANA USE: People are not allowed to smoke or ingest marijuana or marijuana products while driving or riding as a passenger in a vehicle. (This may seem like a no-brainer, but with the sale/purchase of marijuana now legal in California, it's important to note. Unlike alcohol, there is no test for what's considered an "acceptable" level of marijuana in your system while driving. Therefore, ANY amount will be deemed as driving... under the influence) BUS SEAT BELTS: Passengers are required to use seat belts if they are available on buses. If seat belts are available and you choose not to wear them, you can be cited. (This law goes into effect July 1). RIDESHARING DRIVERS' BAC: Employees of ridesharing services, including Uber and Lyft, cannot drive with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.04 if there is a passenger in the vehicle. (currently the law is .08) This should bring some peace of mind to passengers as the law was written with their safety in mind. (This law kicks in July 1). BROKEN PARKING METERS: Drivers cannot be cited for using spaces next to broken parking meters. (GOOD NEWS!) Jurisdictions may limit to parking to four hours, but must provide signs warning drivers of the limited time. Parking citation debt can also be reduced and paid over time for very low-income individuals. NEW VEHICLE TAX: Annual vehicle registrations will include an additional tax of $25 to $175, depending on the value of your vehicle. The tax will go toward the cost of state road repair and improvements. (With more electric vehicles and public transportation, there is less gas being purchased. Less gas = less gas tax = no way to pay for road repairs/improvements. They had to think of another solution) SAFELY CROSSING STREETS: Pedestrians may begin crossing streets when the traffic signal displays a flashing "Don't Walk" or "upraised hand" as long as there's a countdown timer and the pedestrian can finish safely crossing before the flashing signal becomes steady. This clarifies an existing law on when people are allowed to cross. SMOG CHECKS: Owners of new vehicles are exempt from smog checks for the first 6 years and instead pay annual fees of $20. The exemption is extended to 8 years, but the fee increases to $25 during years seven and eight. DISABLED PARKING PLACARDS: The DMV will perform random audits of issued placards and reduce the number of issued replacement placards. (If you're someone using a placard well-beyond the expiration, BEWARE. You can be cited and fined. Not to mention you may be taking a parking spot from someone who really needs it) Permanent placard holders will need to renew placards every 6 years.
