We are pleased to share a short video from Paul Kremer’s Houston, Texas studio in which the artist creates a new, large-scale painting titled ‘Pods 01,’ featured in our current exhibition #ContemporaryPaintings. The self-taught artist carefully paints abstract compositions in bold blocks of color. With a focus on refined forms and solid hues, #PaulKremer’s work is in conversation with his Color Field and Minimalist predeces...sors. Of this particular painting, Kremer says, When titling the painting, it reminded me of watching helicopter seed pods fall when I was a kid in Wisconsin. But I also like the breadth of the term pods. Pods as containers range from seeds to spaceships. ‘Pods 01’ 2020, acrylic on canvas, 72 x 108 inches.

In this edition of our #BerggruenFromHome series, John offers insight into Helen Frankenthaler’s tremendous late 60’s painting, ‘Coalition’ as an exemplification of the artist’s pioneering soak-stain technique. Moreover, John speaks to how wonderful Frankenthaler was, not only as an artist, but also as a person. For the third chapter of our #BerggruenFromHome series, John discusses a small yet preeminent work by Fernand Léger from 1918. The French painter created the work as a study for his larger painting which now lives in the collection of the Musèe d’Art Moderne in Paris. Now, what does a game of gin rummy have to do with all this? Watch the video to find out! #50YearsOfBerggruenGallery #FernandLeger

Gretchen and John Berggruen welcome you into their home once again, this time to discuss the largest figurative painting Diebenkorn ever made. In our second iteration of the #BerggruenFromHome series, John discusses the intriguing way in which 'Seated Woman' hints at the artist’s later Ocean Park paintings. And as with any renowned artwork, John maintains a special acquisition story! #50YearsOfBerggruenGallery

Berggruen Gallery is pleased to present its first solo exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by Bay Area artist Alicia McCarthy. The show opens tonight, March 16th, from 5-8PM. Alicia is considered an integral member of the Mission School, a group of young San Francisco artists who were associated with the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) and who worked in and around the Mission District in the early 1990s. Her ability to registerand generategradual shifts in pe...rceptual awareness is heightened through her use of everyday materials such as latex, colored pencil, and spray paint on wood panel. The highly geometric and structured forms of her designs belie their subtle intimacy.
