Physical Therapy Tips for Thumb Arthritis: Thumb arthritis often starts out with instability and weakness... then later presents with stiffness. What exercises can you do to protect it and improve it at each stage?... Are you having trouble turning keys, opening jars, and gripping doorknobs? Does it feel weak and stiff? Osteoarthritis of the thumb is common and can be very limiting. But, it's also very treatable-- yes, your thumb can improve. With the right advice and the right treatment you can regain mobility, strength, and function in your thumb... UNDER YOUR THUMB At the base of your thumb is a very important joint one that helps you perform countless tasks throughout the day like gripping and pinching. Because of all the motion and activity going on at your thumb, the joint (Carpometacarpal or ''CMC'' Joint) tends to get irritated more so than other joints in your hand. How does it get irritated? The tasks you perform most often at your job can play a role. Motions that repeatedly compress or twist the thumb can eventually lead to a loss of stability in the joint, which can then lead to arthritis. Trauma on your thumb-- from falling on it or hitting it against something-- can also lead to instability and arthritis. Of course, there are other factors that can contribute to arthritis at the thumb -- like age, and genetics-- but we can't really control those things, can we?
