Bear Boat Charters

Looking back thru my posts, I realized that the 2016 epic video from Rod Witel wasn’t on my page. With the recent video post of lighting hitting a sailboat in Boston, I wanted to post our experience sailing thru what was left of Hurricane Darby from July 2016. Had an issue with the boat not getting correctly setup on shore power after a long charter. So I did a quick trip to the boat to correct the issue. Batteries were down to 30% state of charge. My house bank is 4 Group 31 100Ahr Odyssey batteries. I hit them hard with both the engine alternator and the inverter/charger. Odyssey TPPL batteries have a minimum recommended charge rate of 0.4C or 40A per battery. In my case that’s 4x40A or 160A minimum! And here’s the amp meter showing 204A going into the house bank - 100A from the charger and 104A from the alternator. I kept that rate up for almost 1 hr then shut down the engine. Good exercise for the system and proof that the alternator can deliver 100+ amps for an extended period of time.
