Study Finds Dementia Rates Steadily Falling: Good news from the Framingham Heart Study showing that dementia rates fell steadily over the past few decades. The long-running study reports that dementia rates have fallen by 44% in the past 40 years. The study included 5205 participants age 60 and up and shows a decrease in dementia from 3.6 per 100 persons in the late 1970s to 2 per 100 persons in recent years. Study authors say the sharpest decline was in a type called vascul...ar dementia, which is caused by damage to the blood vessels that carry oxygen to the brain. The average age for participants to be diagnosed with dementia increased from 80 to 85 during the study period. A decline in heart disease was also observed as the study progressed. The decline in dementia is believed to be linked to the declining rates of heart disease. Keeping our hearts and brains in good shape is the key to staying healthy and happy for as long as possible. Baby Boomers Break Tradition of Pet Ownership Declining with Age: The baby boomer generation (those born from 1946 to 1964) sure love their pets. Historically, pet ownership declines with age due to the owner’s health issues or the cost of care for the pet. However, baby boomers are breaking this pattern. The 2015 National Pet Owners Survey shows baby boomers still represent 37 percent of all pet owners. That’s approximately 77 million pet owners from this generation. Pets of...fer many benefits to people of all ages, especially retirees. Pets provide comfort and companionship, help overcome loneliness, and give you a sense of purpose. In addition, they encourage us to say more active which in turn produces numerous health benefits such as weight loss and lowering blood pressure. However if you like the idea of pet ownership but aren’t physically or financially able to make that full-time commitment, there are programs out there for you. Some organizations provide therapy dogs for visits to senior centers, retirement communities, and even your own home. Many animal shelters have programs that specialize in matching retirees with the appropriate pet and allow adoption at reduced costs. The bond between an owner and their pet is a special one. A Midday Nap Could Help Lower Blood Pressure: A recent study finds that people who take a midday nap have better blood-pressure control than those who do not nap. More specifically, participants who slept for an hour after their lunchtime meal had an average systolic blood pressure that was 6mmHG lower than their peers. In addition, nappers tended to use fewer blood-pressure medications. The study included 386 patients who were being treated for high blood pressure with an av...erage age of 61. The participants also had other cardiovascular risk factors: 27% had diabetes, 31% were smokers, and the majority was generally overweight. However, the people in the midday nap category still saw the drop in blood pressure readings. Lead study author Dr. Manolis Kallistratos recently presented his research at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) 2015 Congress. He noted, 6mmHg is a small amount, but we have to keep in mind that reductions of 2mmHg may decrease the risk of cardiovascular events by up to 10%. The researchers hope to do future studies with subjects who have untreated and uncontrolled hypertension as well as with healthy participants to see if the blood pressure decrease is the same. While it may be hard for full-time workers and those with other daytime responsibilities to take a 60 minute midday nap, catching a few zzzs at lunchtime could benefit us all.
