Thank you to those who attended the Shred Fest and Dump Day! Together, you helped clean up Barstow. We had a total of 215 cars participate in Dump Day, 243 cars participate in Shred Fest, 324 boxes of documents shredded, 28 mattresses disposed, 56 pieces of E-waste, and 30 tons of trash. Great job disposing of trash responsibly! And a huge thank you to Burrtec, Shred-Your-Docs, and staff who helped with the event.

Inland Empire Community Foundation, in partnership with the Board of Supervisors, is accepting grant applications for the San Bernardino County Nonprofit Assistance Fund through November 16, 2020. The fund aims to give nonprofits assistance in curbing the impacts of COVID-19 on their operations. Nonprofits can receive up to $20,000 in aid. They must provide services in San Bernardino County to be eligible for funding. Organizations with a 501(c)3 status are encouraged to apply. The demolition of the old hospital is underway. Resource Environmental is moving forward with tearing down the structures of the old hospital on 7th Avenue.

The City Council of the City of Barstow is soliciting interested Barstow residents to apply for an appointment to the City’s Planning Commission. The Planning Commission consists of five appointed members and hears development-related projects, and applications related to Planning, zoning, and environmental laws. The Commission also acts as the City’s Traffic Committee, reviewing traffic control, speed limit, and other related issues. Qualified applicants must be a full-ti...me resident of the City of Barstow, be willing to serve without thought of personal gain, benefit or bias, and attend Monday night meetings twice per month and other meetings as may be scheduled from time to time. The appointment is for a vacated seat (two vacancies) through December 31, 2024, with potential reappointment at the discretion of the City Council. Deadline: Individuals interested in applying should submit a letter of interest, with an Application for Service (available from the City Clerk) no later than November 16, 2020, to: City of Barstow, 220 East Mountain View, Suite A, Barstow, CA 92311, Attn: City Clerk Planning Commission Appointment. A selection committee will schedule and conduct interviews of candidates, and recommend a selection to the City Council by January 2021. FREE COVID-19 Testing and Flu Shot Clinic! A reminder for the October 22 covid-19 testing and flu shot event at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Barstow CA from 10am-2pm.

One of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's three deep space network complexes is located right here in our local desert. "Each of the three Deep Space Network, or DSN, sites has multiple large antennas and is designed to enable continuous radio communication between several spacecraft and Earth. All three complexes consist of at least four antenna stations, each equipped with large, parabolic dish antennas and ultra-sensitive receiving systems capable of detecting incredibly faint radio signals from distant spacecraft." You may not be able to visit Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex right now, but you can learn more through the video here.
