Migraine--By Liyan Lu L.Ac. Illustration by Gemma Marsh. Migraine can cause severe throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation, usually on one side of the head. It's often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine attacks can last for hours to days, and the pain can be so severe that it interferes with your daily activities. For some people, a warning symptom known as an aura occurs before or with the headache. An aura can include visual ...disturbances, such as flashes of light or blind spots, or other disturbances, such as tingling on one side of the face or in an arm or leg and difficulty speaking. Medications can help prevent some migraines and make them less painful. The right medicines, combined with self-help remedies and lifestyle changes, might help. (Source: Mayo Clinic) Our Suggestion: Ping’s meridian massage reduces stress, relaxes body, promotes energy flow freely and relieves headaches. Acupuncture rebalances hormones, regulates Yin and Yang energy, cleans the body’s traffic jam and alleviates the migraine. Cupping improves blood circulation, reduce muscle tension and relieves pain. Taiji, Yoga and meditation are slow motion movements, stretching exercises and relaxation training. They all help deal with stressful situations and prevent migraine episodes. Chinese herbs: Pian Tou Tong WanChuan Xiong Cha Diao Wan Tai Ji Tong Tian Ye, Xue Fu Zhu Yu Wan Tong Jing Wan are Chinese patent medicines for headaches, body aches and pains. You can try one of them to see if it helps migraine. Supplements: To relieve and prevent migraine, take vitamin B2 100 mg twice a day and magnesium 100mg four times a day. You also can take Migrelief ( containing vitamin B2 and magnesium ) as labeled to help migraine relief. Acupuncture Helps Fertility Acupuncture is one of the most popular forms of alternative medicine used to improve fertility and possibly treat infertility. According to traditional Chinese medicine, there are channels of "energy" called meridians which is like rivers running through the body to nourish the organs and tissues. Stagnation of the flow can cause physical and emotional illnesses, including infertility. Needling the acupuncture points may unblock meridians; allow th...e energy to flow freely while rebalancing the entire system to help with fertility. The Western, scientific explanation is quite different. One theory is that acupuncture may trigger the body to release chemicals and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system, enhance natural healing abilities and improve physical and emotional well-being. Research has shown that acupuncture increases the amount of beta-endorphins flowing through the body as feel-good hormones to relieve pain. According to the preliminary research of acupuncture for infertility, it may increase pregnancy rates during IVF treatment cycles by having acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer. It also improves blood flow to the uterus, endometrial lining and gonadotropin-releasing hormone that regulate ovulation for women with PCOS. It may increase sperm count and quality for infertility men. It reduces stress and anxiety levels. The above information abstracted from http://infertility.about.com//altern/f/how_acupuncture.htm Dr. Lu has both Conventional and Chinese medicine training to allow her to serve as a bridge between the two medical worldview. She offers a unique, holistic and alternative treatment for women who have been walking the painful road of infertility and would like to try another path or to see if Chinese medicine helps their Western treatment be more effective. Our regular treatment procedure is first Ping’s meridian massage would be performed to improve circulation and relax the mind & body. Second, needles would be inserted into the specific acupuncture points. It helps reduce stress & anxiety, improve sleep, boost the energy level and restore the body back to better health. According to our conservative estimates, the pregnancy rate is 60-70% after fertility treatments at our clinic. By treating the entire system, many of our patients get good results, conceive and carry a healthy baby to full term. Taji, Yoga, Pilates or Yogilates can help with physical and mental overall well being. Healthy diet may help detoxification, improve health conditions and boost the body’s own healing power. Anxiety -- by Liyan Lu L.Ac. Illustration Gemma Correll. Feeling worried, anxious, and nervous is a normal part of everyday life. Everyone frets or feels anxious from time to time. However, when anxiety becomes overwhelming and interferes with your daily life, it is abnormal. Anxiety can cause both physical and emotional symptoms. A specific situation or fear can cause some or all of these symptoms for a short time. When the situation passes, the symptoms go away.... Physical Symptoms Trembling, twitching, or shaking; lightheadedness or dizziness; feeling of fullness in the throat or chest; muscle tension, aches, or soreness; restlessness, fatigue, insomnia; breathlessness or rapid heartbeat; sweating or cold, clammy hands. Emotional Symptoms Feeling keyed up and on edge, excessive worrying, fearing that something bad is going to happen, poor concentration, irritability or agitation, constant sadness. Many people, including children and teens, develop anxiety disorders in which many of these symptoms occur when there is no identifiable cause. Phobias and panic disorder are two common anxiety-related disorders. Phobias are irrational, involuntary fears of common places, objects, of situations. Panic disorders occur when a person has periods of intense fear and anxiety when there is no clear cause or danger. Physical symptoms that may occur during a panic attack include chest pain, feelings of choking or suffocation, nausea, shaking, sweating, pounding heart, and dizziness or faintness. Treatment with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Traditional Chinese Medicine can relieve simple anxiety and also help in combination with medical care.
