Jail-bail scam making rounds in Escondido By Pauline Repard Sep 16, 2014 ESCONDIDO If someone phones you, sobbing, asking you to bail them out of the Escondido jail - don’t do it. It’s a scam, Escondido police say. They don’t have a jail.... Police dispatchers recently have been getting calls from people who say they just got fooled, or nearly were fooled, by con artists asking for bail money, Lt. Eric Skaja said Tuesday. The victims’ descriptions of what happened are similar, possibly indicating the incidents are related, Skaja said in a media statement. The caller pretends to be a either the victim’s family or friend, or a friend of a loved one who is in Escondido jail. The actors are criminals and their story can be very convincing, Skaja said in the statement. If the callers cry, it’s hard for the victims to recognize their voices. Sometimes the scammer gives a call-back number, which goes to an accomplice pretending to answer the jail phone or police station. Skaja said the Escondido station has a holding cell for prisoners, who are then taken to a county jail for booking. They can post bail from the county jail but not from the police holding cell. People should never agree over the phone to give personal information or pay someone without confirming that the call is legitimate, Skaja said. Anyone wanting to check on a possible scam or an arrest in Escondido can call police at (760) 839-4722. See more
