We are thrilled to announce the 2020 participants of the BAFTA Newcomers Program. We added 40 new individuals to the program, with a record number of first-year female participants, totaling 78 percent. For the first year, we expanded the program to the east coast, with 10 participants joining the program from New York. The Newcomers Program is a four-year new talent initiative, recognizing and supporting international rising stars who have recently moved to Los Angeles or ...New York to further their development and career. The program welcomed international talent from across the globe, with representation from the U.K., Australia, China, France, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Kenya, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain and Turkey. The combined group includes actors, directors, producers, screenwriters, composers, cinematographers, executives, art directors, production designers, animators, editors and publicists. Each Newcomer receives access to BAFTA membership events and specially curated events aimed at supporting both career development, and the transition to living and working in the U.S. The program includes professional networking opportunities, peer matching with others who have recently moved to the U.S., curated educational programming including BAFTA Briefing sessions, and access to BAFTA’s wider professional development event schedule including the BAFTA Insights series. This year BAFTA has awarded 28 scholarships in total, 12 in the UK and a further 16 in the US. The global recipients received a total of $250k in financial aid to support studies in film, games and television. Presented as part of BAFTA’s long-standing commitment to support new talents. In addition to financial aid towards their annual course fees, the BAFTA Scholars will gain free access to BAFTA online events and resources. This year’s 28 BAFTA scholars will be studying di...sciplines at various institutions ranging from the National Film and Television School, Christine Blundell Makeup Academy, Glasgow Caledonian University, The City College of New York, NYU Tisch School of the Arts and the American Film Institute. The BAFTA Scholarship Program is made possible by the generous support of a number of individuals, foundations and partnerships. In the U.S., partners include philanthropist Mark Pigott KBE, as well as The Hunter Foundation, HBO, BBC America, DLT Entertainment, King Features Animation, and The Taffner Family Charitable Trust. In the UK, for a seventh year, three students will receive the Prince William Scholarships in film, games and television, supported by BAFTA and Warner Bros., which are awarded in the name of HRH The Duke of Cambridge in his role as President of BAFTA. For the first time this year the Kirsh Foundation is also a named supporter of the UK scholarships program and the Reuben Foundation is supporting for its third year. #BAFTATalent

BAFTA Los Angeles 17.08.2020

Yesterday we announced our 2020 Scholarship recipients, including the first recipient of the Fulbright-BAFTA Scholarship, Lily Freeston from Manchester. Lily has been selected to receive the $60,000 scholarship in partnership with Fulbright Commission to study an MFA in documentary filmmaking at Northwestern University in Chicago. We are pleased to announce our 2020 BAFTA US Scholarship Recipients. This year’s scholars include British students studying at American Film Institute, University of Southern California, Columbia University in the City of New York, Northwestern University, and Berklee College of Music. Receiving the Pigott/BAFTA Scholarship are Adam Baroukh from Columbia University, Jean Liu from USC, Timothy Moorhouse from Columbia University, Olive Nwosu from Columbia University, and Pip W...hite from The American Film Institute. Receiving the BAFTA LA Hunter Foundation Scholarship are Stuart Bramwell from Berklee College of Music and Yvonne Zhang from the American Film Institute. Receiving the first ever Fulbright Scholarship for $60,000 is Lily Freeston from Northwestern University. The BAFTA US Scholarship Program is made possible by the generous support of a number of individuals, foundations and partnerships. In the U.S., partners include philanthropist Mark Pigott KBE, as well as The Hunter Foundation, HBO, BBC America, DLT Entertainment, King Features Animation, and The Taffner Family Charitable Trust Scholarship In Honor of Donald Taffner Sr. & Eleanor Taffner. In addition to financial aid totaling over $250,000 towards their annual course fees, BAFTA Scholars around the world will gain free access to BAFTA online events and resources.
