Native American story tellers today, look for times to tune in. https://www.youtube.com/watch #CAStateParks #AntelopeValleyIndianMuseum
In honor of Native American Heritage month, we recognize the rich diversity of Native American peoples. Since time immemorial, California Native Americans have stewarded these lands, building communities, and fostering rich cultures. Today, Native Americans work to confront some of the most pressing challenges for all Americans. This month we encourage the public to learn more about the people who first called this state and nation home, as we pause to reflect on their past, present, and future. Here is a link to a Digital Atlas of California Native Americans: http://nahc.ca.gov/cp/ #CAStateParks #AVIM #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth

While we are still closed due to COVID-19, a new TV show in production has four Native American writers on staff, and the producer and showrunner is Native American as well. https://www.kare11.com//603-446dce22-7c3c-457b-a383-d28b59

Since we are closed to visitors due to the COVID-19, we have decided to share some of the museum's collections with you. The first items out are the cradleboards. There is a renewed interest among younger generations to learn how to make them and preserve the tradition. The cradleboards (some are still in use today) served some of the same purpose as today's baby carriers, car seats and baby bouncers. Many cradleboards had a handle that could be hooked onto the saddle for eas...y transport. Prior to the arrival of Europeans in 1542, California was one of the most linguistically diverse places in North America. At least 70 distinct languages and over 300 different dialects were spoken. This diversity is also apparent in the ways people lived and the things that they made. All of the Native peoples of California used cradleboards to carry their babies, but despite having the same purpose, each group made cradleboards using their own unique style. Photos from left to right: 1. Hupa cradleboard (Object #082-309-234) on display in California Hall. Our cradleboard is missing the handle at the top. The Hupa are from northwest California on the Trinity River. 2 & 3. Mono Lake Paiute cradleboard (Object #082-309-317) and Washoe cradleboard (Object #082-309-233). The Mono Lake Paiute and Washoe are neighbors in the Great Basin culture region on the east side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The dark diagonal lines on the hood of the Mono Lake Paiute cradleboards are a "bow string" design and indicate a male child. The diamond design on hood of the Washoe cradleboard indicates a female child.
