Austrian Winemakers at the Forefront of a Biodynamic Farming Revolution Some of the country’s winemakers realized 40 years ago that farming methods had to change. We talk to three forward-thinking producers who are still looking for new solutions. The future of farming has to change. As the planet groans, more and more people understand this. But some of the approaches we accept today as possible solutions were once seen as unorthodox, especially the idea of biodynamic farmi...ng. This method was developed by the controversial philosopher Rudolf Steiner early in the 20th century, and it has as many adherents as critics today. In addition to rejecting synthetic inputs, it espouses holistic, closed-loop farming that considers every plot to be a cosmos in itself. It’s especially the mystical elements of biodynamics, based on lunar and star cycles, that set some people on edge. Yet, Austria has long had biodynamic pioneers. They blazed the trail and are now making wines of astonishing beauty and depth. See more

univie: winter school for Cultural Historical Studies "The Discovery of Modernity - Vienna Around 1900" Due to the unstable situation worldwide concerning the COVID-19 virus, the Sommerhochschule of the University of Vienna decided to offer the annual univie: winter school as an ONLINE program. Vienna/Austria - February 6 - 19, 2021... The application deadline for the winter school is December 31, 2020 The winter school courses provide a well-structured introduction into one of the most fascinating periods of Austria's intellectual history in a short time. The culture of the fin-de-siècle is one of the highlights in the history of the Habsburg Monarchy. The two-week program offers a variety of academic courses taught live online. The courses are held by distinguished scholars with international teaching experience. The interdisciplinary lectures will lead to a thorough understanding of the input of the fin-de-siècle on the modernization of Europe. The live online courses encourage interactive participation. These courses with international participants offer the possibility to discuss the influence of developments in Vienna (e.g. the famous psychoanalyst Freud, painters like Klimt and Schiele, musicians like Mahler and Schönberg or philosophers like Wittgenstein) on different cultures in Europe and other continents. A welcome session will introduce the participants to the winter school and give them the opportunity to meet informally with the staff and each other. The winter program also includes an online tour of Vienna's Ringstraße and Art Nouveau in Vienna. Social online gatherings as well as group work in breakout rooms will encourage intercultural and social exchange between the students. Participants thus broaden their horizon, meet colleagues from different fields of study, and make new friends. Given the interdisciplinary aspect of the program our course offerings are, without question, of interest for students from all fields of study. More information about the univie: winter school for Cultural Historical Studies can be found at our homepage at http://shs.univie.ac.at/winter-school Sommerhochschule - University of Vienna

Silicon Valley Falls for Austrian Climate Tech Made of Timber Nestled among spruce forests in an Alpine valley in southern Austria, a workshop was the first some two decades ago, to begin manufacturing a green new material that’s now super-sizing wooden buildings and speeding the adoption of a solution to mitigate climate change. We can build very quickly and cleanly with it and that’s the key, said Marco Huter, a 57-year-old executive surrounded by giant slabs of cross-la...minated timber, called CLT, at his KLH Massivholz GmbH factory. Huter had to double capacity in the midst of coronavirus lockdowns to satisfy booming global demand for the mass timber he produces. () For Austrian timber merchants, who cover about half the world’s CLT demand, the material is a bridge linking the digital age to three centuries of forest management begun by Hapsburg Empress Maria Theresia. She saw Austria’s forests as a national-security resource and mandated strict sustainability laws. Today, woodland growth every 24 hours in the country of 9 million people generates mass equivalent to the material needed for 2,000 new homes, according to the country’s timber association. Bringing that level of data-driven land management to some of North America’s neglected woodlands, which face climate-induced threats like fires and invasive pests, could prove to be CLT’s biggest impact, according to Katerra’s Curtis, who convinced former Tesla Inc. executive Michael Marks to get behind building his factory in Washington state. CLT production relies on cultivated tracts and doesn’t require old-growth trees to be felled. See more

World’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train hits the rails in Austria Rail passengers in Austria are set to take part in a trial of a hydrogen fuel cell train, as the rollout of technology that could change the way public transport systems operate continues at a steady pace. In a statement at the end of last week, ÖBB, the Austrian Federal Railways, said the train would enter passenger service in southern areas of Lower Austria, with the test phase due to continue until at least the end of November 2020. The train is slated to start carrying passengers this week and its deployment will be used to evaluate, among other things, how it operates on challenging alpine routes.

‘Epicentro’ Review: They Are Cuba The Austrian-born Hubert Sauper has made two remarkable documentaries on colonialism, each employing a powerful central metaphor. Darwin’s Nightmare (2005) draws an analogy between foreign plunderers of Tanzania and an invasive species of fish. We Come as Friends (2015) compares the investors descending on South Sudan (and Sauper’s visit) to an onslaught from another planet. Epicentro takes a similarly free-form approach to exploring vestiges of imperialism in Cuba, a country Sauper portrays as having been picked apart by Spain, the United States and finally privileged tourists including Sauper himself.

#Salzburger Festspiele | Salzburg Festival - A Drama With a 100-Year Festival History Gets an Update There’s a special charge to a morality play performed in the midst of a pandemic. The coronavirus has made death and the fear of dying features of daily life in a way that positions us to relate to Jedermann (Everyman), a pseudo-medieval allegory of fate and faith that inaugurated the first Salzburg Festival with an outdoor production in 1920, directed by the festival co-founder Max Reinhardt. In the 100 years since, the Salzburg Festival has grown into one of the most important music and performing arts events in the world. On Aug. 22, it commemorated its centennial with the festival’s 726th performance of Jedermann.
