What's the mystery behind the reverence for the elongated green fruit that is popularly used as a plant-based meat alternative? The tropical jackfruit, part of the fig family, is typically found in equatorial regions and contains a fleshy yellow interior. It averages between 10 and 25 pounds in weight and is loaded with nutrients. From potassium and magnesium, to fiber and antioxidants, one serving contains at least 1/3 of your daily recommended intake! Young and green, unrip...e jackfruits are more often used in cooking because the stringy flesh is slightly acidic and flavorless, making it much easier to season and marinade. While the ripe jackfruits are sweet with tropical flavors, ranging from pineapple to bananas, they are better for desserts or eating raw. When you're at the grocery store, Bria of Ju'C Fruits highly recommends AVOIDING refrigerated jackfruits because they tend to be loaded with preservatives and have a slimy texture as a result. They are not great for cooking or for you to eat. She suggests going with young, green fresh or canned, and to make sure you fully press them to remove all of the liquid. It'll make it easier for the fruits to absorb the marinade and seasonings.
